I’m thinking he wasn’t married. However, I read that his parents were in the crowd watching the performance.

God bless them in their sorrow. Dear Lord, hold them near.

The Blues never used the F-14.

I thought not. Too hot. The F-4 was really too hot, and the F-14 was hotter still.

I saw the Blue Angels at that 1970 air show. The venue was Quonset Point NAS.

I'll be darned. Where were you? I was on Coddington Point with the rest of the OCS regiment. Third Battalion, Lima Company. When you got the duty, you got the duty. Think it was a holiday weekend -- not Memorial Day?

You probably had liberty parties come over from the destroyer piers across the cove from us (I hear they're no longer used.....at least Clinton didn't lease them out to the damn PLA, like he did Long Beach). Might have seen some OC's, too, and Marines of course.

Every now and then we'd see a CVA run up Narragansett Bay to Quonset. I was wondering why they were going up the bay, but then we didn't know what was up there. Couldn't see, of course, because of the interposition of Deer Island.

We stayed on the Point, and Coaster's Harbor Island (where the O-Club and the Naval War College were -- and our YP-Boat pier, where we pulled guard duty). Got a cruise or two in the YP's, but we were pretty busy and didn't have much time for touristing -- head down over the radar and plot table, or flag hoists, or what have you. One class about a year ahead of us got to take a run out into the Sound, down past Newport, and they got to watch the New Jersey practicing with her main batteries, which was beaucoup impressive, we heard the stories -- a lot of OC's out of those classes, when they graduated, pulled battleship duty, the first since Korea. We were a year and a half late, about.

Concurring bump. That had to be hard as hell. I add my own sympathies to yours, for his folks.

C'mon Eagle Eye, do those planes look blue to you?

Actually, that would be the Thunderbirds that had the crash at Dulles and the year was 1972. (Transo '72). F-4 Phantoms. The pilot lost power and ejected as the plane crashed. The wind carried the pilot directly back into the burning wreckage. Count me in as one that was in attendance for that show also.

The most recent Blue Angels accident and resulting deaths (that come to mind immediately) were in 1999 in Georgia before a weekend air show. Lt. Cmdr. Kieron O'Connor and Flight Officer Lt. Kevin Colling were killed when their plane (#7) went down and I believe there was another in 1990. As far as crashes during the actual Air Shows, two Angels collided in Niagara Falls in 1985 killing one pilot and there were two others dating back to 1952 and 1946.

Come on down and watch them practice. You might have some surprises. I’ve only watched about a hundred practices since early 2005.

With all due respect, you must ask yourself: why would the U.S. Navy Blue Angels fly F-18s in air shows and practice in WWII era prop planes? The answer is simple... they don't. The Angels practice and perform in the same planes. The picture you posted is, more than likely, a picture of the Skytypers demonstration team. The company is know for their skywriting but also has a flight demonstration team that practices quite often and travels the air show circuit.

A closer look...

My best guess, but that certainly was not the Blue Angels.

Not much, actually. P-3’s? If there is a question you want answered I could ping the list to it. I think we have one or two members that were in VQ’s, but I’m not sure.

Perhaps someone has already pointed this out, but from all I have read, Eaker never said that Pukin Dog was not what he claims he is.

What he said was that Pukin Dog was new here on FR (I am sure he meant relative to Eaker) and in Eaker's opinion PD had been a prick on the aviation threads.

If you disagree with that, fine, call Eaker on it and produce your evidence...but instead, you went on about, and took issue with something that Eaker never said or implied to Pukin Dog.

Just my opinion, but it sounds like you owe the man an apology on that count.

How many times in one thread do you want to insult me?

Don’t you have anything better to do?

Like playing wingman for your idol?

P4M’s. My husband has stage IV cancer, and I just thought that there might be some “old” squadron members on FR. 1956/57 that he would enjoy hearing from.

Thanks

My irritation was Eaker’s statement the PD was a prick on many aviation threads. I did post late at night (after more than a few cool ones) and did not think it through, just whapped out a post. My apologies for misconstruing what was meant by the post.

I met him a couple times when he stayed with us during SeaFair.  We had a conversation that was funny at the time, but not so funny today.

Rest In Peace.

No prob. Sometimes the juices get going and it just comes out. Thanks for responding and thanks for the clarification and apology. FWIW, IMHO, stock just increased.
