I saw them flying around during an airshow over Newport, Rhode Island, in 1970. I was in a duty company and couldn't go to town to watch, but we saw them moaning around -- heard them more than saw them, those F-4's literally moaned at lower power settings. Got a good look a few times as they were turning back toward the show area.
I've seen them a few times since, flying A-4's and F/A-18's. Never saw them flying F-14's. Didn't know they used them at all -- thought they transitioned from A-4's to F/A-18's? I could be wrong.
The Blues never used the F-14.
I saw the Blue Angels at that 1970 air show. The venue was Quonset Point NAS. I have some slides of that show around somewhere. The F-4 was impressive and still is mighty fast on the deck.
