“Conservatives such as those at FR aren’t necessarily bound by this expedience. They’re playing a longer-term game - the soul of the country. If it takes Hillary! winning a term or two in order to re-orient the GOP, then so be it.”

Screw that! You think we can save the house by burning it down? You know what 8 years of ...hillary “most likely gore” would do regarding are military and SCOTUS picks. I tell you what if you really believe that tell that to the next Marine who is humiliated by having to salute the next POTUS Hillary Clinton. Me thinks you’d be looking for a emergency ward.

I'm not advocating it, I'm merely commenting on the course the conservative movement appears to be heading. But, not to worry, it will most likely have no bearing on the results.

Here's how it's gonna play out, based on calculations made by people & organizations who have millions invested in the outcome:

o some conservatives will stand by their principles and walk;
o other conservatives will hold their noses and vote for Rudy;
o regular GOP regulars will vote for whoever is on the ticket;
o more than enough Dems to offset boycotting Conservatives will swing towards Rudy to put him over the top.

The blueprint for 2008 is California; Arnie can't run due to his birth. Rudy is just an east-coast version of Arnie.

The net result is that we stick it out in Iraq until we win, but the GOP trends further left.
