OK, “CP”, if you want to support a dollar-a-gallon tax increase on gasoline, go for it. I’m not the one who’s going to have to explain to a poor person why he suddenly can’t afford to drive.
And at least stipulate that it go to something useful, like highways, rather than some energy scam like ethanol.
Well, no, I don't support it (yet, at least). Gas taxes are certainly regressive. Musing... there was an article here the last couple of days (I saw the title, but didn't read it) that was about even higher gas prices elsewhere, like Europe. Admittedly, Europe is smaller and has better rail (some places), but still, there are poor people and they have to get around. How do they do it? China is/was famous for the millions of bicycle riders, even though more and more of them are getting cars if they can afford it.
Speaking in Utopian now: in order to help the poor people that need transportation to get somewhere, who currently need to drive there, we need to identify what might work better to get them around. One possibility: Bogota, Colombia. Not perfect, but well, whatever is?
