If we were to make a red-blue map of Canada...

I know there is no 'Republican' or 'Democrat' party in Canada, but let's assume red = conservative majority and blue = liberal majority. I'm curious, which provinces would be which colors?

I'd guess something along these lines... Ontario: blue Quebec: blue Manitoba: "swing province" (could go either way) Saskatchewan: red Alberta: red British Columbia: red Yukon, Nunavut, NW Territories: red Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island: No idea, but I'd guess blue since they're closer to Quebec...

“It has only been the last few election cycles that red has been changed to Republican and I think that is due to the association of Red and Communists ...”

You’re probably right. The Republicans should reclaim the colour blue.

Toronto is deep-blue in US terms; it would have voted over 80% for Kerry (and Bush barely in double digits) in 2004 if it were in the US.

My province-wide coloring:

British Columbia: Barely blue (swing region)
Alberta: Red
Saskatchewan: Red
Manitoba: Barely red
Ontario: Blue
Quebec: Blue or aqua (separatist)
New Brunswick: Barely blue
Nova Scotia: Blue
Prince Edward Island: Blue
Newfoundland and Labrador: Barely blue

Within provinces, county-level maps have starker difference. The big cities (such as Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver) would be deep blue. Red swathes would exist across southern New Brunswick, perhaps parts of eastern Quebec, much of southern Ontario outside the big cities, and almost all of the rural and suburban West (except perhaps the west coast areas). Alberta would be the most red and perhaps red across nearly every county. The most blue would probably be Quebec if the separatists went for the Democrats.

Leafs to the core, FRiend. Then Flames, when the Leafs go out. Montreal does have a nice cosmopolitan culture, though, whatever else you can say about it. Lots of stuff to hate, but lots to love as well.

Most of Canada’s Jews were concentrated in Toronto and Montreal from the beginning, so the Toronto concentration just got bigger. There are probably still 50, 000 to 100, 000 Jews in Montreal, though.

Glad I didn't offend you with what seemed a pretty accurate observation.

Still, I'm willing to bet you won't find any bagels or smoked meat (je vous demande pardon! - "le beouf fumee") being marketed au la belle province as "Toronto-style" - LOL!

Rural Quebec is conservative. The Tories need to win seats now held by the Bloc in those areas as well as pick up ridings in Ontario's 905 region to gain a House Of Commons majority. Its just very difficult to do in a country in which 60% of the vote goes to three left-leaning parties.

True that. But, let’s face it. There is no Ontario cuisine. Toronto food, in particular, is just a wide assortment of various kinds of ethnic food. Good, healthy but not bound by a unifying theme.

The problem is those areas, especially the suburban 905, are increasingly liberal and hard to crack without alienating the rural and especially the Western base...

The Red Tories have too much power in the party though unfortunately...

Manitoba elected more Conservatives thanany other party in last federal election. As did the other western provinces.

Numbers after provinces are seats held by order of Parties as listed. (ie. first number Conservative, second number Liberal, etc.- last number is total seats in that province). Ontario is the real problem and holds the majority power in Canada.

I’m going to Edmonton next month. My sister lives about 3 miles north of that mall you refer to. I got some wicked deals on clothing at Christmas, so I might suffer the mall again.

“Sadly, there’s very little of Canada that’s very conservative. Even Alberta isn’t as conservative as some of our most conservative American states. Sad situation, really.”

You are so right and it is indeed sad. Another thing to keep in mind when viewing Canadian politics is that geographic demographics can be misleading being that over 90% of Canadians live within 100 miles of the U.S. border.
