Why did Chris Matthews, the moderator of the first GOP Presidential debate, find it necessary to pin down all the Republican contenders their positions on poor, departed Terri Schiavo?
To most Americans, this case would seem to be the very definition of a dead issue, you should pardon the expression.
Yet Matthews chose to use precious time in a 90 minute televised debate from the Reagan library to ask each and every one of the ten Presidential candidates whether he agreed with Congressional interference with the Schiavo case more than two years ago.
Matthews and the other questioners made no similar attempt to drill each of the candidates on health care, education, guns, Afghanistan, education, Israel and the Palestinians, AIDS, Venezuela, college loans, hate crimes, Cuba, affirmative action, tort reform, balancing the budget, or social security.
None of these significant issues received nearly as much attention as Terri Schiavo, or embryonic stem cell research, or faith in politics, or abortion --- in fact, questions about abortion seemed to dominate the proceedings, with Mayor Giuliani forced to address questions about reproductive rights on four different occasions.

David Gibbs III?
In the end it truly was the courts that killed her and it was the courts
that led her to the precipice, or am I recalling things incorrectly?
Several time Rudy has said something, and then added qualifications that showed he did not really mean what he initially said.
Today is Karl Marx’s birthday (1818) and I don’t expect anything else to go right either.
Give me a candidate who does what's right regardless of whether it's popular.
Rudy flunks.
Again.
I don't know what the gays see in him.
I guess you expect things like the media to go "left" today, even more. Anyway, I preferred Groucho.
Nor do I and I don't want to know. Today I already have an earworm of a Christmas carol I didn't like, and can't get rid of it. Pondering Rudy may make my poor head explode.

Sounds like the Boy Scout leader we kids had. We stayed well enough away from him, although some didn't. He finally was arrested. We were so happy! He would have found Rudy to be cute, I bet.
Right, Mikey wanted her done in but couldn't do it without the enthusiastic support of Judge Greer and the courts. They passed the death sentence.
The left wanted her dead. They want unborn babies dead. The left wants the elderly dead.
The left wants condemned criminals alive.
No wonder I chose my user name ...
Lotta fundamentalists in that blog complaining about klutzes who don’t believe Darwin is God. They have their litanies and rituals. They just don’t hear themselves or look in a mirror.
Not that I hadn't already :-)
Which tells us that as a political issue, supporting Terri is unpopular now. And this, in turn, tells us that the electorate is badly misinformed about the case. We must maintain and step up our efforts to get the truth out -- and get it out before the next elections.
I wonder if we could collect and edit Terri threads into a book. It would be the only book in print that offers a theory of how Terri ended up on the hall floor, almost dead, after Michael came home late one Saturday night in 1990.
Meanwhile, more power to the few politicians with the guts to stand up for Terri now that it is less popular!
I like all of the so-called dark horses more than the front runners. I hope the front runners are not front runners for long.
When people know Duncan Hunter, they like him. He came in the top three of most of the straw polls, even when he was outspent 20 - 1.
He is a very manly man.
Here’s partly why I like Duncan Hunter:
by John Hawkins
PS: I can tell you from talking to Hunter that he is VERY PASSIONATE about building a fence on the border and about any and all things related to the military. He also seems to have a pretty good sense of humor.

John Hawkins: Would you like to see Roe v. Wade overturned?
Duncan Hunter: Yes. You know, Im the author of the personhood-at-conception bill which right now has over 100 co-sponsors ...that would define personhood as moment of conception, so, it would allow us to have a reversal of the effects of Roe v. Wade without a constitutional amendment.

DUNCAN HUNTER QUOTE: Not only do we have a bad trade deal with China but theyre cheating on the one we do have. China is cheating on trade and theyre using our trade dollars to buy ships, planes and missiles. Theyre becoming a super power and stepping into the shoes of the Soviet Union.

This a little off topic, but here is an excellent review of Terri by Fr. Rob Johansen concerning the media. Note when you get to Michael's stay at the hospice part, he and Debbie were at the courthouse claiming Terri's inheritance 3 hours after she died, which the article does not mention. Where was Michael?
