Romney talks to Regent grads
The Daily Press ^ | May 5, 2007 | Kimball Payne

Under the Regent University banner, former Massachusetts governor and 2008 Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on Saturday told the school's largest-ever graduating class to reach past the sandbar and live in the deep waters of life.

"In the deep water, life is about others. In the deep water, there are challenging ideas," Romney told the class of 1,005 students and nearly 4,000 friends, family members and faculty. "Some of you will be tempted to stay near shore, where there are no breakers and you can't make any waves."

Romney's 13-minute commencement address was especially significant because the Mormon presidential aspirant delivered it at the evangelical Christian university founded by Pat Robertson in the late 1970s. In addition to the nearly 5,000 people on hand for the event, the speech is likely to reach a wide audience of evangelicals on the Internet or in replays on Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network, CBN.

Here’s another promising development in the Romney campaign.

Whichever one get the most momentum (which means they can beat Hillary), gets my vote.

Actually, given the Big DIG (a 'tunnel' in Massachusetts with one leaking wall)
and Romney's utter indifference to the Massachusetts citizen owing forever to the boondogle (except to collect campaign donations from the builder of the Big DIG boondogle),
along with his decimation of the Massachusetts GOP,
his comments are ironic.

As far as I’m concerned, this is the equivilent of giving Hussein Obama a platform at Saddleback. Or, maybe worse.

Romney is a judicial supremacist of the worst sort, who pushed the homosexual agenda in MA to the extreme, and signed socialized medicine, complete with taxpayer-funded abortions, all of which should make him anathema to the people at Regent. I don’t know what they’re thinking.

You reveal Romney's one weakness in this race:

He is associated with Massachusetts, and idiots around this country, just like you, will tag him to the state's many, endless problems instead of giving credit to the destruction of Massachusetts to the real Saboteurs, the Democrats.

His problem isn’t just Massachusetts. It’s the bills he affixed his signature to, and the policies he implemented.

I’ve ceased being surprised by how much a Romney supporter is willing to ignore.

You clearly don’t know anything about Massachusetts and the Big Dig. Tying Romney into that fiasco is laughable.

Thanks for your intelligent contribution to the conversation.

Which liberal are you going to get sucked in by next week?

Romney is tied to the BIG DIG by accepting contributions from Bechtel .... and then by doing nothing.

Sorry, your logic is epoxied and fossilized.

The following are excerpts from Gov. Romney's Commencement Speech today at Regent University, the evangelical Christian university founded by Pat Robertson:
"I want to offer my sincere thanks to Doctor Pat Robertson for extending me the honor of addressing you today.

"This university, its students, its alumni and the faculty serve as an example of Dr. Robertson's dedication to strengthening and then nurturing the pillars of this community and our country: education, fellowship, and advancement."

"You know, I don't remember when it was exactly when I went beyond the sandbar. My family had a cottage on the shores of one of the Great Lakes. For the first 40 feet or so, the lake is shallow, warm, and protected from the big waves by a sandbar. That's where I spent most of the hot summer days as a boy. I liked it there. One day, my brother got me up on water skis. Perhaps fearing that a turn would cause me to fall, he drove the boat – and me – straight out into the deep. By the way, the lake is over 100 miles wide. I screamed the whole terrifying ride. But ever after, the deep water is where I wanted to be – body surfing in the breakers, water skiing, diving. Oh yes, the water wasn't as warm and calm, but it was clean and powerful and invigorating. I got out of the shallow water for good.

"Over the years, I have watched a number of people live out their lives in shallow water.

"In the shallows, life is all about yourself – your job, your money, your rights, your needs, your ideas, your comforts.

"In the deeper waters, life is about others – spouse, family, friends, faith, community, country. In the deep waters, there are challenging ideas, opposing opinions, protracted battles of consequence."

"You are, of course, giving a great deal of thought to your career. The economic environment may be more turbulent and competitive than my generation has known. Some of you will be tempted to stay near shore, where there are no big breakers and where you will never make any waves. Others will push beyond the sandbar, pursuing new frontiers, exploring new ideas, driving to achieve, to learn, to influence, to contribute.

"That, of course, is the heritage of this land. The people who came to Jamestown 400 years ago may not have all been saints. But they were all pioneers. They crossed the broadest waters and dreamed the grandest dreams. Their spirit is the American spirit. It is why America surpassed our native England to become the world's most powerful nation. And it is the heart and spirit of the American people that make this country the hope of the world. Great people have made a great nation."

"If there ever was a time for great Americans, great and good Americans, Americans who are willing to cross into the deep waters of life, it is now.

"You cross into the deep waters by marrying and raising good children. There is no work more important to America's future that the work that is done within the four walls of the American home.

"You cross into the deep waters by driving yourself in your education and in your avocation beyond the safe and comfortable, to reach new insights, to make contributions, to serve.

"You cross into the deep waters by serving in your church, in your community, in the military, in government or in volunteer service.

"I am optimistic about the future of America because I have seen the spirit and heart of the American people." ...

And yet, you continue to do so. Gotta wonder why. To quote Jack Nicholson from As Good as It Gets: “Go peddle crazy somewhere else. We’re all full up here.”

Crazy is ignoring your candidate's radically liberal record.

Crazy could also be defined as insisting a candidate is "radically liberal" despite all the evidence to the contrary. Good night, EV.

Here’s another promising development in the Romney campaign.

It really is. I'm amazed that Rev. Pat Robertson would extend the invite. What a gracious man.

Given how enthusiastically and kindly Dr. Alan Keyes has been supported and treated by Utah Mormons over the past eight years, you would think his supporters would be similarly kind and gracious toward Romney, whom most Utah Mormons are now supporting.

But if you thought so, you would be wrong. At least some of them don't miss an opportunity to verbally assault and abuse Romney.

That's okay. I'm confident that Utah Mormons will continue to show graciousness to Dr. Keyes regardless of the rude and ungracious behavior of some of his supporters, especially here at FR.
