Re: “Mediterranean Union” ... You are right about turkey, etc... This has been batted around for some time now, by economic and security interests around the Mediterranean:

“Sarkozy has proposed [supported would be a better word here] the idea of a Mediterranean Union, modeled on the EU, but which would include Turkey. He said the union would work closely with the EU, and have some shared institutions. The plan would institute a “shared judicial area,” to combat corruption, terrorism and organized crime, including people smuggling. Sarkozy said it would also incorporate tighter immigration controls, a ploy he hopes will woo voters from further right.”

“During a visit to Turkey, Assembly of French Chambers of Commerce
and Industry (ACFCI) President Jean Francois Bernardin said Turkey
and France should make initiatives to establish a Mediterranean
Union, saying that cultivating a stronger Mediterranean identity,
in coordination with the EU would expand the region economically
and culturally”
A big “Angelique would have loved to see this news” ping!
