Why do they hold their elections on Sundays?
Lots of euro countries do.
We Brits don’t though!
The french are the french, and we Brits don’t like or trust them either way....although we like to holiday in the south...But that’s it!
A lot of European countries hold elections on Sundays. I guess they’ve found it’s more convenient; in addition, some of them (such as Spain) have a “period of reflection” of a day or two before the election during which no campaigning is allowed. So it works out well if it’s over a weekend.
Makes as much, if not more, sense than holding them on Tuesdays, so that everyone has to show up at the polls before work or after work, meaning they have to be set up to handle more people at one time. The equipment and people to do that are wasted for most of the day.
Maybe if we held our elections on the weekends, like so many European countries, we’d get a higher turnout than the disgraceful 40% we usually get. Sort of makes our pro-democracy check thumping appear a little lame to other countries, when we can’t even get out the vote. 3 cheers for the French for coming out in droves!
