Take your friend up on the one night hotel deal. You’ll be in Mid-Town. Penn Station and Madison Square Garden are right there. Easy subway ride from Penn Station to Ground Zero. Walk west to Statue of Liberty boats.
Your one stop tourist source.

Everything you need to know you can find there, transportation, maps etc. Do not even think about driving in mid-town. Shuttle buses and limo to the airports. With your family size the limo may in fact be cheaper when you consider per head cost of bus. Taxis too small and nasty for a family of five.
LOL! yeah I remember you! That was the Tex Antoine story, the most bizarre weatherman in New York history! LOL! I was just looking up Watkins Glen on the map...I think your best bet would be to take an Amtrak train into NYC from Watkins Glen, I`m not sure what train runs from there but I would think it would be Amtrak.
Don’t forget that Watkins Glen is not that close to NYC. In fact it is about 250 miles away. You would know how many stops you need to make with three kids. Once you get there you will need a place to ditch your car until you leave town.
LOL! Here in NJ we look the other way... :)
We are are a liberal sanctuary sate you know, just ask Gov. Corslime. sarc/off
if you can find a few spare minutes, it will be more than worth your while to goto the International Motor Racing Research Center just one block from the foot of the hill going up to the track, and it’s free.

woops! state......
Yes, post #2 Mr. Moonlight says you can take Amtrak. Tell me what days (or day) you will be in the city and I can show you around, we wil have a great time, I know everything about the city. I`ll private email you my phone number...
The best time to come is the weekend as there is a helll of a lot less traffic, plus they have fairs and parades (and liberal protests we can make fun of) all over the city that your kids will love. If you come during the week it is going to be tough as the city is having a really big problem right now with traffic, so much so that they are considering charging cars $8 extra besides tolls, plus it will take forever for me to drive you anyplace. Saturday and Sunday is the optimum days.
And don't drive into Manhattan.
i have a picture of my Mother five months pregnant with me up at the track watching the 1954 GrandPrix...
You know, if it is that difficult I could even drive up there and meet them. They let us drive anywhere. There was a cabbie last month who drove a couple to Arizona. I kid you not....

Find out what the parking situation is at the hotel. If it’s reasonable, leave the car there and take the subway.
While you’re at the Glen, take a ride around the old road course.
“Are you saying that a trip out to the Statue is probably not that great a thing, given one day to spend? I remember seeing it from the boat ride around the island and that was cool enough.”
I would say that 100%. It’s a lot of trouble and time and mostly waiting in line.
The museums are great - met museum of art has permanent collections like from ancient egypt, great masters paintings, etc. natural history museum has great dino skeletons, all kinds of nifty stuff. It’s a full day, lots of things to see, and the kids will be entertained, learn a lot, and have a very memorable experience.
Oh man, I got to come see you!
Dragon Bus...
Is there a city in New York named Arizona, or do you mean Arizona, Arizona?
:O)
And, dang, how does one pay the fare for that? With Tuesday's winning Mega Millions lotto numbers? :O)
By the way, if you're into music, my favorite record store in NYC is called Other Music, at 15 E 4th St.
Train. Do not attempt to drive around Mahattan with small kids.
“If you want to get to Carnegie Hall, practice. ;)”
Now, you ruint a perfectly good joke by just throwing the punchline out there. Next time, please give a little lead in, you know, something to build up the suspense, prolong the inevitable.
Sometimes quickies are good, but this one needed nurturing.
Besides, I wuz gonna use it!!
