I need a little help. I am travelling to Watkins Glen, NY the first week of June. I would like to go into NYC. I would have 3 children with me, 14,9,6. I would like to see Ground Zero and maybe the Statue of Liberty. I want to rent a car to get there, but I don't want to drive all the way into the city. I would like to take the subway or something, but I know absolutely nothing about NYC. What's the best way to do this?
I might stay one night (I know a guy who could get me a great deal at a hotel across from Madison Square Gardens). We have a race going on at Watkins Glen, so I can't stay too long. This might be the only time I get to NY. (My 1st time.)
Amtrack to Penn Station ... right across the street from your hotel
First; you open “Map Quest.”
My but you have been sleeping for about a year...
You have done right by asking. Buncha NYC Freepers are sure to show up with help. This is a great board. Wouldn’t you miss it if it were gone?
There’s a FReeper here who’s a NYC cab driver. Really nice guy. He knows everything about NYC. If I can think of his screen name, I’ll ping him. Maybe someone else reading this knows who I’m talking about. I think he joined in 2005 or 2006.
Oh you must be kidding me. Please read my profile.
Uh, with the exception of post 3. There are some who hang around simply to crack wise.
If you want to get to Carnegie Hall, practice. ;)

6 post to FreeRepublic in your life and you post a travel question? That is so KEWL!
You might want to rethink the driving. Parking lots charge outrageous prices - $40 a day is not atypical.
Hey, he joined on 2 Dec 04. This is his 6th post. His last one before today was on 25 Feb 06. Then he starts a thread asking for directions.
Sorry for being “trigger happy” but it looked a little funny.
Yes they do.
To be honest I think you and the kids would enjoy the trip more if you went to the Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Check both websites for their current exhibits. There is other good stuff, some revolutionary war sites like Ft Tryon Park, in Washington Heights. But I think the museums would have a huge impact on the young uns. Plus there are kid/student priced tix.
Check New Jersey Transit's website. They have complete train schedules that you can print out in Adobe.
And take subway, bus, or cab - don’t drive!
Whoa, yeah, you’re who I’m talking about! That is really weird. You posted less than a minute after I did.
I remember your posts because you were complaining about getting stuck in traffic when the President of Iran was supposed to show up at the UN!!!! :O)
And I remember you talking about some obscure weatherman who used an offensive phrase, live on-air, back when you were a kid in the 70s. The offending remark was related to rape and Confucius, if I’m not mistaken, but my memory is not as good as it used to be.
Ok, all kidding aside, I went up to NYC last month, saw “The Phantom of the Opera” on Broadway, if you have a chance to see it while there, don’t miss out.
Those crazy kids..... When I get a S-A crack like that I check the "member since" and it speaks volumes.....
