GOP Plan: Prison for Illegal Border Crossers("Build a wall & deport 'em all!")

Democrats are seeking to slash the number of foreign workers who could come to the U.S. on temporary visas as the Senate prepares for another day of freewheeling debate over a bipartisan immigration measure.

A Republican proposal to crack down on illegal border crossers with mandatory prison sentences also was to be discussed Wednesday, as leaders in both parties sought to alter elements of the broad agreement that are drawing criticism from their core supporters.

The measure would toughen border security, give quick legal status to the estimated 12 million immigrants in the country unlawfully and create a new workplace verification system to bar undocumented workers from getting jobs.

It would create a point system for future immigration applicants that would place less emphasis on family connections and more on education and skills in demand by U.S. businesses.

Republicans, responding to conservative criticism that the measure is too lenient, were considering efforts to bolster its security provisions and make it more difficult for illegal immigrants to get on a path to citizenship.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who helped craft the immigration deal, was expected to offer the border security amendment.

Democrats, hearing criticism from labor unions and immigrant groups on the guest worker program, were focusing on shrinking or otherwise altering it.

Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., was seeking to cap the number of annual visas available for temporary workers at 200,000. A similar amendment passed the Senate last year by an overwhelming margin.

As currently crafted, the temporary worker plan would allow up to 600,000 workers - largely unskilled, nonagricultural laborers in areas such as construction, landscaping and meatpacking - to stay for up to three two-year stints, provided they left the United States for a year between each stay. A Democratic attempt to strip the program altogether failed Tuesday in the first major test of the fragile immigration compromise.

Democrats also are planning attempts to ensure that more visas would be available for family members of permanent residents and U.S. citizens.

The coalition of conservatives, liberals and centrists who worked out the White House-backed deal are struggling to keep it intact.

Senate leaders in both parties, however, say it's important to have a wide-ranging debate on the measure. They have postponed a final vote until June.

"There's good and bad in this," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said of the bill. "That's what amending the legislation is all about - trying to improve it."

Build a wall and deport 'em all!

Why should American taxpayers be saddled with the cost of incarcerating other countries' criminals. It's not like we are long on space and short on American criminals.

We should build TWO walls and deport ALL illegals including the incacerated. We will not only cut down on prison costs across America but will open up slots for AMERICAN criminals who are roaming about the country unabated.

!

The chart above clearly shows, among other things, that in those industries that employ illegals the MAJORITY of the jobs are held by....GASP!...AMERICANS. That puts a HUGE HOLE in Bush's claim that illegals are doing jobs Americans won't do.

It also shows, as Bush has claimed, that more than a million illegals a year have been deported since Bush took office.

Well if they can deport 6 million, they can double their efforts and deport 12 million.

Lastly, after BOTH borders have been secured, all illegals should be deported including the incarcerated. Why should Americans pay to incarcerate other countries' criminals. It's not like we don't have enough American criminals to incarcerate. And by deporting the foreign incarcerated in American prisons we not only lower our prison costs but we open up slots for AMERICAN criminals who are now roaming about the country unabated.

The 2008 Conservative Revolution has started! Now all we need is a CONSERVATIVE to lead the revolution. Because we are in danger of not only losing our two party system but our sovereignty. It is time for CONSERVATIVES to take back the GOP and the time is NOW

I’ve said this before, I think.

If we really cared about Mexicans, we would force them all to go back to their own country so they would fix the problems there which cause them to flee.

As long as the Mexican government is allowed this safety valve of immigration to the U.S., there will never be enough pressure for that government to reform.

If Mexico was a repressive totalitarian state, then things might be different, but right now, IMHO, all they need is a little watering on their own cactus of liberty.

And I am supposed to believe you will enforce NEW laws when you have been a miserable failure in enforcing the EXISTING laws? We are not as stupid as you think we are.

Want to end all illegal immigration? Make it a felony to enter the USA illegally. A felonly allows the use of deadly force.

“Stop every campesino at our southern border, give him a handgun, a good rifle, and a case of ammunition, and send him home. He will know what to do with our gifts and good wishes. The people know who their enemies are.”

Ya think?

No, it does not. Nor should it.

Agreed - make it a felony, deport illegals upon arrest, refuse government benefits (including education) without proof of legal residence , and put anchor babies in group homes (or be deported with their parents until they reach legal age).

End EITC to illegals, make English our common language, and prosecute fraud (including ID theft and false claims for benefits)

Prosecute/fine employers and deport - NO AMNESTY IMHO

The kind of reform that would result would be inspired by Hugo Chavez rather than Samuel Adams. ;)

These guys are tone deaf. This bill needs to die, period. Even the supposed allowances for some conservatives concerns are watered down to the point of being meaningless.

Build a wall and deport 'em all!

Better yet, turn off the magnets that draw them here.

If they had no access to jobs, money or social services, then no walls would have to be built, because they'll have no reason to come here. And there'd be no reason to deport them, because with nothing keeping them here, they'll leave on their own.

If you think that you have another thought coming.

The FBI reports that MS-13 is already in 42 states.
And MS-13 is taking applications.

A Republican proposal to crack down on illegal border crossers with mandatory prison sentences

Idiotic and a waste of time... unless the prison time will be spent in Mexico. Deport 'em to the other side of a 20ft. concrete border wall, and keep them the hell out forever.

AMERICA... YOUR RIGHTEOUS ANGER IS TIPPING THE SCALE!!!

We have been fighting the amnesty proposal as if the future of our country depends on our efforts... because it does. As working, voting, law-abiding, thinking Americans, we can only come to one conclusion: that those who support the Senate bill have chosen to intentionally ignore the will of the people, and have put their own political ambitions ahead of what is good for the United States of America. This agenda is unacceptable, and we have rejected it utterly. Moreover, it constitutes a direct threat to the future of this republic, because it indicates that there are members of the body politic who no longer answer to the will of the people, the Constitution, or even to rational thought itself.

Keep the pressure on, because the Senate is hoping this will all just go away if they wait long enough. Write, call, email, and fax your representatives... and DO NOT STOP. If you are unable to reach your Congressional or Senate rep, try the office of El Presidente. Contact your local and state party representatives, and the Republican and Democrat National Committees. Keep building the tidal wave that we need to KILL THIS BILL!

I still want to know how much this is going to cost. Has anyone seen the numbers and figured out how big a tax increase it will take to implement this atrocity? Ask your senators for that information.

Also, I wonder why my senator has access to speeches he’s given in both Spanish and English. He doesn’t represent anyone who can read, write, or speak English. (Wink, wink, not, nod.)
