WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration and key congressional Democrats and Republicans stepped up their efforts to sell a broad immigration compromise Thursday as lawmakers braced for a public backlash at home.

"Many Americans are rightly skeptical about immigration reform," President Bush said in a Rose Garden news conference. "This bill provides the best chance to reform our immigration system and help us make certain we know who's in our country and where they are."

“This bill does not grant amnesty. Amnesty is forgiveness without a penalty,” Bush said.

Nothing to see here folks, let’s move along.

I haven’t heard anything from (or attributed to) Cheney about this bill. I somehow doubt he’s too pleased with it, though, but that’s just my intuition.

"I did not have sex w/ that woman, Ms. Lewinsky"

"Read my lips; no new taxes"

"This is not an amnesty bill"

W is just following presidential traditions.

Doesn’t this guy have some snake oil to peddle somewhere else? We need a professional here.

Yeah. But how would you ever get these criminals - I mean politicians - to vote for their own demise? The time for term limits has arrived - they blew it & now we need to correct the system.

I know, I know - someone out there is going to say - “but we already DO have term limits - it’s called voting!

That hasn’t worked so well for us, has it? Once a congressman gets in there - they have all kinds of advantages at their disposal to STAY there.

Can anyone go to the photo "It depends on what the meaning of the word 'Amnesty' is" and photoshop a Mexican flag on the lapel?

Cheers!

“Read my lips, NO NEW TAXES.”

1992 redux.

That sound you hear is the National Democrats popping champaign corks.

You are so right. I keep hearing how people are going to take out Senator Graham in the next election and I practically laugh out of my seat because I don’t think they realize how difficult it is to do unless you want a Democrat in there.

It doesn’t grant amnesty, but immediately allows lawbreakers to stay in the country.

Everything else can go on table once the borders are secure.

I agree with this and the admin should understand that nothing will work until the borders are secure. However, tax amnesty is a deal breaker too.

Oh I know. I just can’t believe two Republican Presidents in the history of the U.S. are bringing this up. In 1986 it was President Reagan and now President Bush....Makes you wonder about those eight year terms...if we had one six year term both President Reagan and Bush would not be able to do this. Makes ya go hum...

The American people have found they can no longer trust either the President or any of their congress critters.

Whole lot of quacking we are hearing from our Lame Duck Pres. On this subject, it's all BS. Like Lincoln said, "...you can't fool all of the people all of the time". Nobody's fooled on this one. Well, maybe a few. Sad.

(perhaps we should mail the congress critters and white house 30 dimes for the 30 pieces of silver)

I have thirty silver coins that I will donate.

“What is wrong with our presidents.”

They only pay attention to us when they run for office.

“One doesn’t know the meaning of “is”.
Another can’t see a pig in a poke to save his reputation.”

Teddy Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenberg, Ronald Reagan and perhaps Harry Truman were the only great Presidents in the 20th Century up to the present. They had their faults - no one is perfect. But their hearts and minds were in the right place - which is NOT what you can say for the rest of of them, including the current incumbent.
