Thompson In - Yes!

Thompson In
If you believe this report – and we do – former Sen. Fred Thompson will indeed throw his hat in the ring for president of the United States. As many readers of the GOPNation.com know, we endorsed Thompson, believing he is the best candidate at the right time to maintain the White House for the GOP. An Thompson entry would shake up the Republican primary process almost immediately and in our opinion, cause one or two GOP candidates to withdrawel from the race before the end of summer. Stay tuned.

Gingrich Getting Closer
Meanwhile, it looks like former GOP Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is getting ever closer to his own race for the presidency. In what can only be described as the must-read story of this early week, the New Yorker’s Jeffrey Goldberg paints a GOP in turmoil with its leaders (including Gingrich) at each other’s throats over the party’s losses in 2006 and dwindling chances in 2008. Expect lots of Rove bashing in this piece.

Zoellick at World Bank
President Bush is expected to name deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick to head the World Bank. Zoellick would replace the disgraced Paul Wolfowitz who resigned last week. Hmm, another Bush crony in another plum position. Yeah, that will work out.

Did you hear?
The mainstream press didn’t tell you but we will: gas prices have started to fall, thanks in part to higher inventories and of course, the passage of Memorial Day. Today’s average stands at 3.197/gallon – down 3 cents from the high set on May 24. Don’t worry, any Fourth of July increase will surely be reported as a price surge by the press, no matter how much the prices fall between now and then.

Drudge Headline of the Day
Gotta love this: “I Saw The Climate Change”, describing Nancy Pelosi’s reaction to her recent trip to Greenland. Classic liberalism.

According to one poll. Just talked to a Republican friend here. We’re planning an event for this Sun. She’s heard from a representative of every presidential campaign except the big three. Interesting.

You’re absolutely correct. There are also large dairy farms that use them but crop farmers don’t need them. That’s why they’re more concentrated in certain areas.

A Fredneck? Not bad.

Not a Fredhead? That’s what I’ve been calling myself.

I'm doing double duty now. One of my very best Republican friends died very suddenly Friday morning. It was my job to keep him informed as to what was happening. He took his loyalty to Republican ideals very, very seriously. He leaves four young sons. We talked politics at least once a week and e-mailed in between.

Republicans lost a very devoted man last week. He served as our county chair and I was his co-chair for many years.

I think you’re right about your 3-way race prediction.

Of the three mentioned, Thompson is the obvious choice.

Guiliani? He will be the candidate when pigs and angels join hands and fly out of you know where. He will never be acceptable to the party.

I like Mitt Romney, but must confess I never heard much about him until he decided to run. I think he would be a good VP candidate with Thompson and he might consider it. He’s not as young as he looks, but he is still young enough to run in 8 years. He’s attractive, charming and all that, but the percentage of people who would be turned off by the Mormon thing is probably large enough to give an advantage to the dem candidate. That is unacceptable.

Well, that leaves Fred, and he ain’t bad leavings.

but I just cannot get out of my mind, the picture of millions of “Liberated” women going to the polls en masse to “vote for a woman, because it’s OUR time”...............

Don’t worry about it! No one hates women more than other women. Believe me! I’ve seen it in the workplace. A man gets promoted over you, the woman shrugs and goes on. A woman does it ... hell hath no fury, etc.

I’m way too mad at Laura to vote for her. She’s been a real biddy about our President and there is something wrong with her emotionally.

I’d like nothing more than to see a Thompson/Gingrich ticket.

I'd like that to be Thompson/Hunter, or vice versa!

I’d like a Thompson/Hunter ticket if the Thompson was Tommy Thompson. He has a better chance of winning the nomination than Fred.

I like Bolton, too; however, I imagine when all the analysis is complete the Republicans will choose someone who they believe will carry some strategic region of the country.

I think you're right, though I also would bet that it will not be someone currently running for President, though Romney or Huckabee are possibilities, especially if either withdraws before the primaries. Hunter is also a possibility, but only if they decide that he gives them a good chance at picking off California. I'm less convinced of this than some others, though Hunter might give him a bump in the other border states as well.

Of those who are not running that could get a look, it will likely either be a governor, former governor, or someone working with the RNC or other national Republican organizations. Tim Pawlenty or Frank Keating could give regional balance, but both are strongly identified with McCain, and have both endorsed him. Haley Barbour or Mark Sanford might be more palatable, but seem to have less interest in national office and are both, like Thompson, from the south. Bill Owens is still out there, but I don't know what the status of his marriage is these days, and I'm not sure if he's changed his mind on getting back into politics.

As for non-governors who have been big in national politics, Michael Steele is the Chairman of GOPAC, and JC Watts was his predecessor. Kay Bailey Hutchinson is replacing John Kyl as the Senate GOP Policy Chair. She's soft on abortion, which could be a problem, but she's strong on most other issues and did vote against the immigration bill.

Just a few names of the more likely VP candidates. I actually like Bolton a lot myself, and while he doesn't bring a lot of executive or political experience to the table, I'd love to see him debate the Democrat VP candidate. I've also plugged Tommy Franks in the past, but I'm reevaluating that right now. I personally think a retired general would be a very good pick, but most are virtual unknowns when it comes to domestic politics.
