US States Renamed For Countries With Similar GDPs
StrangeMaps ^ | June 10, 2007 | strangemaps.wordpress.com

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is a convenient way of measuring and comparing the size of national economies. Annual GDP represents the market value of all goods and services produced within a country in a year. Put differently:

GDP = consumption + investment + government spending + (exports – imports)

Although the economies of countries like China and India are growing at an incredible rate, the US remains the nation with the highest GDP in the world – and by far: US GDP is projected to be $13,22 trillion (or $13.220 billion) in 2007, according to this source. That’s almost as much as the economies of the next four (Japan, Germany, China, UK) combined.

The creator of this map has had the interesting idea to break down that gigantic US GDP into the GDPs of individual states, and compare those to other countries’ GDP. What follows, is this slightly misleading map – misleading, because the economies both of the US states and of the countries they are compared with are not weighted for their respective populations.

You won’t see Japan or Germany on the map either since no single state would equal their gdp.

Was it Ipanema on West 46th? If so, I will miss that place.

Nope, it had a name that sounded sort of like "Karaoke"! That's as close as I've got it. So, is there another Brazillian restaurant in the area?

Cool.

The map shows Nebraska as having the same GDP as the Cezch Republic.

This is all the more interesting when you consider that the estimated population of the Czech Republic is 10,228,744.

Nebraska has fewer than 2,000,000 people.

That is a pretty cool map. I see that I’m in Bangladesh. Maybe I’ll outsource myself.

does that make the Pine Barrens Siberia?

Ah, so that's how the Russian was able to get away from Christopher and Paulie. He knew the area well.

I note that there is no China on this map. That might throw some cold water on all of our fun if we laid that monster on our map.

I think it perfectly illustrates why we need to pay attention (good and/or bad) to China.

All those little pissant countries listed on that map can kiss our big American ass or make us some better trinkets if they want respect.
