Broward may cancel deal with radio station because it airs Rush Limbaugh
Sun-Sentinel ^ | 6/13/07 | Scott Wyman

Rush Limbaugh has long been a thorn in the side of liberals, but now, because of him, some Democratic politicians don't even want to join with a local radio station to broadcast hurricane information.

Radio station WIOD, AM 610, has been the official channel for emergency information from Broward County government for the past year. The County Commission, all Democrats, balked at renewing the deal Tuesday, unable to stomach the station also being home to Limbaugh's talk show.

Commissioner Stacy Ritter said she did not want to support a station that's out of step with area politics. Ritter, a Democratic stalwart in the state Legislature before being elected to county office, cited talk shows hosted by Limbaugh and Sean Hannity and WIOD's partnership with Fox News.

The deal with WIOD would ensure that news conferences are broadcast start to finish live from the county Emergency Operations Center in Plantation. Emergency managers became concerned during hurricanes in 2004 and 2005 that radio and television stations preempted their announcements in favor of news out of Miami

Liberal Politics was the real disaster of Katrina.

“I agree its completely wrong, but think about this. If it was a local radio station that was located in a staunch Republican area that carried Air America and all the ultra liberal programming out there, would people feel the same if the local Republican government did the same thing?”

No. The station would be out of business because no one would listen to it. It’s called free market and the lib pols are trying to undermine it in the name of their liberal agenda.

You are assuming Republicans would do the same thing. They wouldn’t.

So take the Emergency Broadcast system off the station with the most listeners. This woman is incompetent.

Not the same thing. Liberal radio stations are usually low powered and poorly run. Very few libs listen to them even on a good day with no emergency. Just because leftists support airing that drivel doesn’t mean they care about hearing it themselves.

What about the people that did NOT vote for her.

Also her office is NON-partisan. Why is she being partisan? For all she knows it was conservatives who put her in office.

Also, what is the power output of the station? Seems they should want the high output station.

Also she is under the confusion that somehow Limbaugh’s being #1 in that market is not because of the people who voted for her.

She is behond ignorant. Obviously she needs more campaign donations from developers to help her brain work.

I d@mn well wouldn’t tune into that station to have to wait to listen for emergency news between hours of nothing but Bush and Republican bashing

How is that any different from what its like when emergency broadcasts come over MSM stations, not to mention NPR? For most of us, we're already there.

My heart really bleeds for the couple of Florida Rats that may have to experience in reverse what the rest of the country has already lived with for decades.

By a strange coincidence, EIB Command is located in Broward County! Its fun for Rush to live in Palm Beach. Where else can liberals cancel a radio station he's on? ;-)

You are completely incorrect on this, as the example of Air America proves.

Even in a “Liberal Heaven” like Broward County, WIOD has a huge following. In fact, the one station that did carry Air America no longer does, all because of ratings.

If WIOD did not have the audience it does, they would be off the air or changing their programing. However, their lineup remains. 12pm Rush followed by The Schnitt Show.

Air America down here never caught on. The audience just was not there!!!! It seems to me if liberals did not listen to WIOD, with the large amount of them in Broward/Dade, WIOD’s rating would be in the toilet. Instead, Air America was flushed.

To be honest I d@mn well wouldn’t tune into that station to have to wait to listen for emergency news between hours of nothing but Bush and Republican bashing,

This line of thought is way out of line. They are not concerned about people not getting the updates, because they are not tuning in because of Rush. From the article; "Commissioner Stacy Ritter said she did not want to support a station that's out of step with area politics."

This is all about the politics, and the Dems even admin it. They do not care about peoples safety. They signed the contract with the station in the first place for a reason; probably because it had the potential to reach the most amount of people. Now, they are willing to say that that reason doesn't matter, because of politics. Nuts and bolts of it are that they are willing to put their constituent's lives at greater risk, because of their political views.

No one listens to Air America, so it would endanger the puclic to use them.

That is absurd.

When they “go emergency” there is no talk radio, just emergency information all the time.

This commisioner is NON-partisan in election.

The majority of radio listeners listen to Rush.

Also you are only getting 1/2 the story, don’t they also have a companion FM station too? It should broadcast the identical information and content. Listeners have a choice even in disaster.

This is just attack Rush BS.

Does anyone know the power output of that station?

Seems they should be going for the most output rather than sacrificing lives with lower power.

for those whoe don’t know, all 67 counties have websites:

from broward’s: http://www.broward.org/stacyritter/

’m Stacy Ritter, your Broward County Commissioner. I represent the residents of District 3, which includes portions of Coral Springs, Tamarac, Sunrise, and Parkland.

There are many challenges that face Broward County — the second largest county in the State. Together we must focus on streamlining our county government to make it more efficient and responsive to residents. Among our challenges are our transportation systems including mass transit, the crisis in affordable housing, emergency preparedness as hurricane season approaches, and managing the growth of our county. We have to face these issues with the knowledge that government must lower residents’ property taxes. That’s why we must look for efficiencies in the way we do business.

I recently hosted a town hall meeting at the Tamarac Community Center with Congressman Robert Wexler. The three hundred residents who participated asked questions about a host of State, Federal, and local issues. One of the Broward County issues on the minds of many people at the meeting was the status of our airport expansion project, the progress that is being made to build a new runway, and the creation of a new terminal with additional gates. Many may not realize, but oversight of the airport is under the jurisdiction of the Broward County Commission. The airport is an enterprise venture, meaning that it is financially self-sufficient and does not utilize taxpayer dollars to operate. I am the County Commission’s liaison to the airport. I know just how important to the economic development of Broward County our airport is.

The issue of property taxes was also discussed at the town hall meeting. The County has implemented a new budget process to examine all facets of county government. The zero based budgeting process should help us identify waste in government and places where we can cut spending. The Florida Legislature is considering rolling back our tax collections to a level that would save residents as much as 35% of their current property taxes for residents of homesteaded property. Because of these looming cuts and the growing needs of our County, we must use every tool at our disposal to save money.

I want to give a special note of appreciation to everyone who helped make this town hall meeting a huge success. Congressman Wexler and his staff worked very hard and together we had an afternoon that proved informative and useful.

I look forward to continuing our efforts to meet with the residents of District 3 and all of Broward County and provide you with updates and seek your input on the issues facing Broward County.

My office at the Broward County Governmental Center is located at 115 South Andrews Avenue, Room 413, in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Our district office is located in the Family Success Center at 10077 NW 29th Street in Coral Springs.

We are always available to our constituents, and I personally would like to hear from you as we move forward together. Please contact me with your questions, concerns, and requests by calling my office at (954) 357-7003 or e-mail me at sritter@broward.org.
Thank you again for your overwhelming support!

Sincerely,
Stacy Ritter
Broward County Commissioner
District 3

I agree with you, and because that station has the highest watts it should carry the signal. If the programming is dropped completely then the advertising is dropped completely too, that means the station isn’t generating revenue while it is broadcasting emergency news and these officials are completely wrong. If it is spot news that interrupts the normal signal for a few minutes each hour then I think if the shoe was on the other foot we would be b*tching about it too.

Not only that, thanks to digital radios useless stations like lib radio can be programmed out. I guess there are some who would block Rush but it can't be many.

Somebody needs to tell that moron Commissioner Stacy Ritter that Rush is only on 15 hours a week which is a low percentage of any station's airtime. This woman only cares about her twisted religion of leftism and public safety means nothing to her .

You have it completely Ass About Face.

It isn’t about “having to listen to Rush to get the info” It’s about making sure everyone listening to whatever they chose to listen to gets the information.
