WASHINGTONSenate Majority Leader Harry Reid introduced an updated immigration bill Monday, launching one more attempt to conclude debate on the contentious issue and approve the measure in the Senate before Congress breaks for the 4th of July holiday.
The next two weeks are likely the last chance for passage of an immigration bill in the Senate this year, and this seems to be a critical make-or-break moment for advocates of comprehensive reform.
The bill was pronounced all but dead two weeks ago, when Reid, a Nevada Democrat, pulled it from consideration after several motions to limit debate failed. At the time, several Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), insisted Reid had rushed a process that would have likely resulted in passage of the bill, had Republicans simply been afforded more time to offer amendments.
A group of bipartisan senators, the original architects of the measure, spent the bulk of last week deciding on an acceptable list of amendments, whittling a few hundred proposals down to a final 22, split between Republicans and Democrats.
McConnell said on Sunday that the eventual outcome of the bill, which would mandate improvements in border security and employee verification programs and put the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants already in the U.S. on a pathway to citizenship, is too close to call.

He's likely too much a gentleman....I would think he'd believe that Bush is the kiss of death for him....
perfect!!!
That’s what I was wondering. They keep changing the timeline on this.
Don’t worry Bush, we are going to change our minds. No Amnesty; send the illegals back and build that fence.
HAHA
Lamar only wants people who love his 25,000,000 illegal aliens to call or write...
This was passed to me.
Please pass this on any way you can.
When you call a Senator or Congresmen outside your district or State.
At minimum Politely inform them,
If the Senator votes for cloture or amnesty
I Promise..
I will contribute money to their defeat in the next election.
I will organize 10 of my friends in my community to help me.
I will phone bank with my friends for their opponent regardless of party. (tell them you have free long distance if you do)
I will organize a hand written letter writing campaign against the Senator to insure his or her defeat.
Keep it simple and straight to the point..
Most elections hinge on just a few percentage points either way so they know and their handlers know for certain this is no idle boast.. You and your friends can indeed be the cause of their Senators defeat using the above tools..
Drive that messages home and you are talking to the people behind the scenes. Those assessing and recommending to the Senator what his course of action and vote should be. They may all really want this abomination but they also want to be in power most of all. (If they do not care about us as their constituencies do you believe they really care about illegals?)... NO they care about power and the wealth staying in power can accrue to them. There are also others beyond the immigration issue who have spent time and money to put them in power. They also will become opponents of Amnesty and Cloture if it could cost them their influence in the Senate or House.

I have just spoken to the DC offices of Senators Alexander and Corker (Tennessee) and Lott and Cochran (Mississippi). I confirmed the commitment of both Alexander and Corker to OPPOSE cloture this morning, then asked the flunkie to pass along my thanks for preserving the voice of the American citizen in the halls of Congress.
I told the Lott and Cochran flunkies that although I live in Memphis, both of my Tennessee senators were committed to opposing cloture on S.1639, so I would be free to spend many hours of the election year just 20 miles south, in the most Republican part of the state of Mississippi, working to defeat anyone supporting this bill in any manner, including cloture.
Not just the date - S.1348 has become S.1639
Great work!
I have a co-worker who is a Dem. He hates Lott and he absolutely HATES this amnesty bill.
It’s rare that we agree on legislative issues, but he sees the problems with S. 1639.
Unfortunately, I just heard that cloture was approved. The actual votes soon will be available, and every one of us needt to burn these votes into our minds and into our opposition or support in 2008 and beyond. This was the one that counted, and the lying weasels that supported cloture but “oppose” the final bill are the very least deserving of our future support.
I never have missed voting since my 21st birthday, and I am not about to start. But I would write in my own name before I would vote for any of these traitors.
