It's actually not a problem. Just have it in the original box, and it's a good idea to tell them it's there, but there are no forms to fill out or anything.

I accidentally flew to Orlando with a box of .45 ACP in my checked luggage. I was not using my normal TDY luggae, as the trip was longer than usual and the one I use for 2-3 meetings just isn't big enough for a full workweek of meeting. I'd forgotten the amo was in the larger one, left over from a car trip where I thought I might get a chance to shoot the .45. I declared it at Orlando on the way home via DFW.

Still ammo is probably cheaper in Texas. My .22s aren't picky and besides I have plenty of .22... well maybe not plenty, but more than a brick (500 rounds).
