What a shame. Military service has been a very important way for races to mix and know each other. It has also been an important road to advancement. i guess there are those who want neither.
I experienced playing sports, either together on the same team or being a competitive opponent, also achieved great mix race relations. Respect is earned during and remains afterwards, unless one has no respect for themselves. I know a few of them, also.
