Here we are again my friends, hopefully for the last debate thread on this particular monstrous legislation. Proceedings are supposed to begin at 9:30 a.m. EST, with the cloture vote being taken at 10:30 a.m.
On a personal note, you've all been wonderful in your passion, vigilance, and commitment to the principles on which our country was founded. If I have to be in a foxhole, I want to be in it with you guys.

Oh God, Mel wearing his poncho on his sleeve. We get it already, we should support the bill because we hate Mexicans if we don’t. But here’s a news flash - many many Mexicans HATE us. That’s why they booed Miss America and Tony Romo. They’re not coming to our “shores” because they want to be part of us. Most aren’t anyway, I know this for a fact.

The Southern vote is all that is keeping this country from flying apart. They want to give amnesty to such a large group that it will, in one generation, with family reconciliation and their children, come close to equaling the entire Southern vote.

I agree - it's also about about nationality as well. Also, if this were not 24 million mexicans but rather 24 million chinese or 24 million Sudanese, there is no way the administration would be pushing for this so hard.
I do truly believe that this boils down to Bush's soft spot of mexican nationals - particularly his sister in law.

This is confusing. Sen Stevens said voting for cloture would allow the amendments to be considered, which would continue the debate. Must be some procedural details we ordinary citizens can't possibly understand.
