Being a living goddess has its advantages for 10-year-old girl

WASHINGTON -- Even by the standards of the luminaries who sweep through Washington, the little girl in front of Lafayette Elementary School almost six miles north of the White House was special. Politicians, power brokers and the occasional celebrities who come through town hope to be respected and maybe, in a childlike place in their grown-up hearts, genuinely liked. Sajani Shakya, 10, is worshipped. In Nepal, Sajani is a living goddess, one of about a dozen such goddesses in her homeland who are considered earthly manifestations of the Hindu goddess Kali.

Tough time finding a date for your senior prom?

LOL. Nope. Just many decades of dispassionate observation :).

Girls are much easier than boys before puberty. After that, parents pay for those easy years in spades. It would be best for all were they just put into hibernation from 12 to about 17, when they start to become wonderful humans again :)

I wanted to be a Lama, but the best I could do is to be an Alpaca.

I'm glad you saw the (intended) humor in my remark...some folks here would have got defensive (the one's who had getting dates to their proms, anyways.) I agree wholeheartedly with this...

"It would be best for all were they just put into hibernation from 12 to about 17..."

...although I might add a few years to that upper limit.

So she’s from a place where the dominant religoin dictates that they treat certain rare children with special reverence during childhood.

She's from the upper West Side?

...don't be surprised when atheist liberals start claiming that Christians have no place in American society.

You mean they don't?!? I thought that was their mantra!

LOL. Well, we all have our place in life.

Wow!

I’ve never before had a post deleted on FR!

I left to get some work done and returned to see that my heartfelt comments stirred up some politically correct anger.

Not taking it back. I meant what I said.

Thanks, TR, for speaking the truth. It can be dangerous.

Thin skinned on FR is a surefire way to have no fun at all.

I’m not sure what the tone of Jeddidah’s remarks were but I will say that Hinduism is a sick, twisted and brutal religion that shares much of the blame for the caste system in India.

“40 million people in India, most of them Dalits, are bonded workers, many working to pay off debts that were incurred generations ago. These people work under slave-like conditions. The majority of Dalits live in segregation and experience violence, murder, rape and atrocities to the scale of 110,000 registered cases a year according to 2005 statistics. No one believes these numbers are anywhere close to the reality of crimes committed against Dalits. Most crimes go unreported.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalit

If my comments are not PC - too bad.

And I'll say that if you're going to make such claims about Hinduism, you must feel even worse about Christianity and Islam, which have long histories of condoning and approving slavery as practiced by their followers.

The part you omitted from your Wikipedia clip:

"Information in this article or section has not been verified against sources and may not be reliable."

There's no doubt that casteism and debt bondage are very real and very serious problems in Indian society, despite one of the most wide-reaching and intrusive affirmative action programs in the world. Debt bondage continues to be a problem for members of every religion in India.

But you're attempting to slur one particular religion because of the evils practiced by some of it's followers, based on old religious teachings which are no longer upheld or supported. No religion comes out looking any better than Hinduism by that standard - including yours. Many come off looking considerably worse.
