:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
US Steps Up Security Following Attack in Britain

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff made appearances on several television talk shows.

He told ABC's This Week program there is no indication of a linkage between the events in Britain and any specific attacks on the United States. "We do not have, at this point, specific, credible intelligence that there is an attack, a particular attack, focused on this country," he said.

But at the same time, speaking on CNN's Late Edition program, Chertoff said U.S. authorities are concerned about the threat of terrorism, especially in the coming months. "We have had a number of al-Qaida leaders quite publicly talking about how they want to carry out their threats against the West. So, given that and given the history that we have had over past summers, with attacks in Britain, I think we were clearly focused on this as a possibility," he said. Full story...

I can vouch for the Chicago weather.
By the way, the lightning during the storm was amazing! I’ve never seen anything quite like it.
Lightning horizontally and the flashes sooo bright, even though it was still daylight.

Nearly $1M in motor homes stolen (Toronto)

Police are asking the public to be on the lookout after more than $800,000 worth of motor homes were stolen north of Toronto.

The vehicles were taken from the Hitch House on the well-known stretch of Highway 11 known as Gasoline Alley in Oro-Medonte Township overnight between July 7 and 8, the OPP say.

A 2007 Spartan Travel Supreme worth nearly $550,000, a 2007 Endura Gulfstream worth $144,000, and a used 2004 Endura Gulfstream worth $80,000 were stolen from the RV centre, which sells high-end motor homes, Const. George Silvestri with Barrie OPP said today.

“It’s one of the biggest I can recall in recent memory,” said Silvestri about the theft, adding that he’s been a police officer for 28 years and with the Barrie detachment for three years.

“It is one of the larger ones that have come out of this office.”

IDF: War with Syria would be 10 times worse than Hizbullah (excerpted)
Yaakov Katz, THE JERUSALEM POST Jul. 11, 2007

Predicting that war with Syria could erupt if Prime Minister Ehud Olmert does not begin peace negotiations with Damascus, the latest IDF assessment also states that such a conflict would be “at least 10 times worse” than last summer’s conflict with Hizbullah. . .

According to IDF assessments, Syria is not interested in an armed confrontation, but has stepped up its preparations for war since last year’s Israel-Hizbullah conflict.

Due to the lack of communication between the two countries, the IDF assessment is that a war could erupt sometime in the coming year if a diplomatic resolution is not reached first.

If war breaks out, the IDF believes Syria would fire thousands of long- and short-range missiles at Israeli cities.

The assumption is that a war with Syria would erupt due to a “miscalculation” along the border, in the form of a terrorist attack that escalates into a larger conflict.

Syria has come to believe that the United States will attack Iran this summer, and that as a result, Israel will once more go to war with Hizbullah. If that happens, Syria believes Israel will not confine its operations to Lebanon, but will also strike Syrian targets.

Syria has transferred several hundred medium-range missiles to Hizbullah, The Jerusalem Post has learned, which has completely replenished its weapon supplies, exhausted during last summer’s war. The missiles include 220-mm. and 302-mm. Katyusha rockets that have ranges of up to 60 kilometers.

The IDF suspects that Hizbullah may have received more advanced Iranian and Syrian missiles, with the assumption being that any weapon small enough to fit into a standard 12-meter shipping container has been sent to the guerrilla group by the two countries. . .

“Online plot raised real fear, agent testifies”
By Alfred Lubrano
Inquirer Staff Writer

On trial: Michael Reynolds says he tried to trap terrorists.

SCRANTON - A Montana FBI agent testified yesterday that the bureau had become “very concerned” about Michael Curtis Reynolds, a Wilkes-Barre man who went on the Internet and talked with someone he thought was from al-Qaeda about using trucks filled with propane to blow up energy pipelines in late 2005.

“We determined this person may be a threat,” special agent Mark Seyler testified. “We wanted to bring the situation to a conclusion as fast as we could.”

Reynolds was arrested by the FBI at a snow-covered highway rest stop in Idaho on Dec. 5, 2005, according to the federal government, after going to the spot to pick up $40,000 he believed was payment from al-Qaeda.”

“German Interior minister under fire for anti-terror plans”
07/10/2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “In an interview with weekly magazine Der Spiegel this week, Schaeuble’s frustration appeared to bubble over as he lamented that Germany would not even be capable of launching a strike at Osama bin Laden if it knew where he was hiding. He also pressed for changes in laws to allow pre-emptive detention of suspected militants and said authorities should have the right to prevent people they deem dangerous from using the internet and mobile phones.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “There was a storm of protest last year when Schaeuble and other conservatives proposed putting more surveillance cameras in train stations and airports following a failed attempt to detonate crude suitcase bombs on two German trains.”

‘Mrs Bin Laden’: Jane Felix-Browne

Father-in-law: Osama Bin Laden

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A grandmother from Cheshire has married Osama bin Laden’s son following a holiday romance.

Jane Felix-Browne, 51, married the scrap metal dealer - 24 years her junior - in an Islamic ceremony in Egypt after the pair fell in love after meeting at the Pyramids.

The mother-of-three and parish councillor has so far kept her marriage to 27-year-old Omar Osama bin Laden a secret from all but her closest friends and relatives fearing a hostile reaction.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Omar, who lives in Saudi Arabia and is one of 11 children father by bin Laden with his first wife Najwa, has another wife and a two-year-old child.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A former interior designer, Mrs Felix-Browne, who also uses the Islamic name Zaina Mohamad, said: ‘I find it very difficult to live without him and I know he does too. But really we have the most normal life possible.’

Mrs Felix-Browne, a keen rider and scuba diver, is having to come to terms with the perils of becoming the daughter-in-law to the notorious al Qaeda leader.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “She added: ‘Omar is wary of everyone. He is constantly watching people who he feels might be following him.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “’He last saw his father in 2000 when they were both in Afghanistan. He left his father because he did not feel it was right to fight or to be in an army.’”

“Rebels behead Philippine troops”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Islamic militants in the southern Philippines have killed 14 marines, beheading 10 of them, a military spokesman has said.
Nine other marines were wounded and at least four rebels were killed during the incident on Basilan island.

The clash took place as the marines were searching for an Italian priest.

The priest was seized in June by kidnappers believed to be from either Abu Sayyaf or the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

Both groups are seeking an independent Islamic state in the southern Philippines.”

Two pastors shot dead in Colombia; Leftist guerilla group implicated

By Michael Ireland
Chief Correspondent, ASSIST News Service

COLOMBIA (ANS) — Members of the leftist guerilla group FARC are believed to be responsible for the deaths of two Pentecostal pastors who were assassinated last week in southern Colombia.

Pastor Humberto Mendez, age 63, and Pastor Joel Cruz Garcia, age 27, were approached at around 8:00 PM on July 5, as they preached at an open-air service in the village of El Dorado, located in the department of Huila in the southern part of the country, where FARC has a strong presence. It appears that the 17th Brigade of the leftist guerrilla group, FARC, is responsible.

According to church representatives, a group of armed men wearing camouflage clothing called them by name and led them away. The bodies of the two men were found the next day 40 meters apart; both had been shot in the head.

While authorities and church leaders seem to agree that FARC committed the murders, the motive is unclear. The families of the pastors have said that they never received any warnings or threats from any group.

Reports by the news agency, www.GospelNoticias.com , say the assassinations were in response to the participation of local churches in nationwide protests against terrorism and kidnapping.

Church representatives in the area, however, also point to the ongoing risks that accompany preaching and teaching Christian principles in a region with a significant guerrilla presence. According to church leaders at the local and national levels, FARC has declared protestant pastors to be legitimate military targets.

These two assassinations are representative of a wider problem for communities of faith, particularly those located in rural areas and conflict zones, across the country, says Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), a human rights watchdog organization which specializes in religious freedom, works on behalf of those persecuted for their Christian beliefs, and promotes religious liberty for all.

Two church based NGO’s, Justapaz and the Commission for Restoration, Life and Peace, have documented more than 100 targeted assassinations of pastors and other church leaders across the country since 2000. Many are a response to a refusal on the part of the pastors to participate in or support the activities of the armed groups, including paying protection money or tolerating the recruitment of young people from their congregations into the armed groups.

CSW says that while FARC is not responsible for all of these murders, they have been implicated in a significant percentage of them. Right-wing paramilitary groups and another leftist guerrilla group, the ELN, are believed to be responsible for the rest.

Tina Lambert, Advocacy Director of CSW, said, “Our prayers are with the families and the communities of these two men at this very difficult time. It is completely unacceptable for the FARC, or any other armed group, to target church leaders. These were two pastors, both civilians, who were simply preaching at a peaceful religious gathering. We call, once again, on all armed actors in Colombia to respect religious freedom and to uphold the rights of believers to practice and live out the tenets of their faith.”

“Three arrested in arms plot to kill Americans”
By Jerry Seper
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
June 9, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A suspected international arms dealer was arrested yesterday in Spain and charged with conspiracy to sell millions of dollars in weapons to a State Department-designated foreign terrorist organization in Colombia to kill Americans.

U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Administrator Karen P. Tandy said Syrian national Monzer Al Kassar, 61, of Marbella, Spain, along with suspects Tareq Mousa Al Ghazi, 60, of Lebanon, and Luis Felipe Moreno Godoy, 58, also of Marbella, were arrested as they prepared to finalize a multimillion-dollar deal with the Marxist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, to pay for the weapons.

Mr. Kassar was arrested on the U.S. charges by Spanish authorities in Madrid; simultaneously Mr. Ghazi and Mr. Moreno Godoy were arrested in Romania.

“Monzer Al Kassar commands a global munitions empire, arming and funding insurgents and terrorists across the globe, particularly those who wish to harm Americans,” Mrs. Tandy said. “He operates in the shadows, the silent partner behind the business of death and terror.””
