:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
US Steps Up Security Following Attack in Britain

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff made appearances on several television talk shows.

He told ABC's This Week program there is no indication of a linkage between the events in Britain and any specific attacks on the United States. "We do not have, at this point, specific, credible intelligence that there is an attack, a particular attack, focused on this country," he said.

But at the same time, speaking on CNN's Late Edition program, Chertoff said U.S. authorities are concerned about the threat of terrorism, especially in the coming months. "We have had a number of al-Qaida leaders quite publicly talking about how they want to carry out their threats against the West. So, given that and given the history that we have had over past summers, with attacks in Britain, I think we were clearly focused on this as a possibility," he said. Full story...

FBI investigates letter to several newspapers

By Barbara Ramirez
Originally published 01:00 a.m., July 4, 2007

A letter sent to several newspapers nationwide, including the Caller-Times, has prompted a federal investigation.

The letter, received by the Caller-Times on Tuesday, contained four lines handwritten in red ink and was postmarked Queens, N.Y.

The letter mentions Goldman Sachs, a New York-based investment banking and securities firm, and includes the line “Hundreds will die.” It was signed “A.Q.U.S.A.”

The Caller-Times turned the letter over to the Corpus Christi Police Department, which notified the FBI.

“We believed it was our responsibility to immediately give the letter to law enforcement authorities, which is what we did,” said Caller-Times Editor Libby Averyt.

“We have no idea whether it’s a hoax or a legitimate threat. Regardless, we did the right thing in notifying police about the letter.”

Corpus Christi Police Chief Bryan Smith said he did not believe there was a local threat, but the department notified the FBI because all threats are taken seriously.

“I do not feel there is any specific threat of local concern,” Smith said.

Shauna Dunlap, special agent and spokeswoman for the Houston division of the FBI, which handles investigations in the Corpus Christi area, said similar letters have been received in several states.

Dunlap did not know how many letters had been received or which states were involved, but said the New York division of the FBI is leading the investigation.

Editors with the Knoxville News-Sentinel, the Idaho Statesman and the Journal Gazette in Fort Wayne, Ind., confirmed Tuesday they had received a similar letter.

“No specific threat has been identified to any specific area, or areas in the Houston division of the FBI,” Dunlap said. “However, we recommend everyone continue their vigilance, especially around the holiday.”

That was my guess, too.

Maybe I should have posted the “Captain Obvious” picture.

Are you having any luck garnering information about the Texas/Nigerian building project? I would be a bit concerned, too. Sounds weird, but, could be perfectly legitimate.

A Texas Town Nervously Awaits a New Neighbor
By SIMON ROMERO
New York Times

GREENVILLE, Tex. - “Blackest Land, Whitest People.” Until the mid-1960’s, those words were painted on the water tower and on a sign near the square in this North Texas town, a once-segregated cotton-ginning center. Joe A. Bobbitt, the county judge in Greenville, still has photographs of the water tower and the sign on the wall of his office here.

UK terror police find suicide note

LONDON, England (CNN) — A letter by one of the men who police say rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into Glasgow’s airport shows the alleged attackers intended to kill themselves in a suicide bombing, sources close to the investigation tell CNN.

British police investigating Saturday’s incident in Glasgow, Scotland, found the suicide note, which they believe shows the men intended to die in the botched attack...

A man who worked at a baggage delivery company at 15108 Lee was found lying in the alley behind the business on Tuesday night with several gunshot wounds to his abdomen area.

The man, 47-year-old Donald Bruce Webb, was taken to Northeast Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to the Houston Police Department, Webb was involved in an altercation with an unknown man earlier in the day and the two exchanged insults several times during the afternoon. Webb was working alone in the alley shortly after 9 p.m. when co-workers heard several gunshots and went to investigate.

Police did not say whether there is a suspect at this time.

North Korea - going ballistic again?
04 July 07 (excerpt)

Several recent reports emanating from East Asia have suggested that North Korea is preparing for a ballistic missile test exercise. These reports further speculate that the upcoming test may occur on 4 July, the anniversary of its wide-ranging July 2006 missile test. However, these reports have not been confirmed by sources within Japan, South Korea or the US.

The most significant ballistic missile development since the 1998 launch of the Paektusan space launch vehicle has been the July 2006 test. On 5 July (4 July and Independence Day in the US), North Korea conducted its largest and most comprehensive ballistic missile test to date, launching seven ballistic missiles - one Taepodong-2 and six Scud C/ER and Nodong missiles. While the majority of the systems were launched from transporter erector launchers in the Kittaeryong area of Kangwon Province, the long-awaited Taepodong-2 was launched from the Musudanni Missile Launch Facility on the northeast coast. Shortly after a successful lift-off there was a catastrophic failure of the first stage, which resulted in the system’s destruction.

While the 2006 test demonstrated the viability and reliability of North Korea’s Scud- and Nodong-class systems, it left open the status of the three ballistic missile systems that the Korean People’s Army (KPA) recently placed, or is placing, into service. These are the KN-02 short range ballistic missile (a variant of the Soviet 9K79 Tochka/SS-21 SCARAB); the Musudan intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) (a variant of the Soviet R-27/SS-N-6 SERB); and the Taepodong-2 intercontinental-range ballistic missile (ICBM)/SLV. All three systems require, even by KPA standards, further developmental testing to validate their designs.

I will agree, that most Muslim’s are highly educated. That is what’s so sad about throwing good life's away for a false profit.

Some are, some aren't. What is probably true is that there is more disparity in education between the most and least educated Muslims than there is between the most and least educated Westerners, even for those Muslims living in the West. For every highly educated doctor or other professional you'll find several members of the poorly educated "underclass," which is often more radicalized than the upper classes.

The situation in Muslim countries is even worse; the education that many receive is almost exclusively in the Koran, which like any religious education is not very useful professionally unless you plan to become one of the clergy.

We will blow up the White House, al-Qaeda threatens

Habib Trabelsi Dubai
November 12, 2006 (excerpt)

AL-QAEDA’S chief in Iraq used an audio message posted on the internet yesterday to threaten that the terror network would “blow up the White House”.

“We announce today the end of a phase of the jihad [holy war] and the start of a new one … to usher in the project of an Islamic caliphate and restore Islam’s glory,” Abu Hamza al-Muhajer said in the message.

“We swear we will not rest from our jihad … before blowing up the filthiest house, dubbed the White House,” he said. . .

The other thing that occurs to me along this line is that you have to be very careful about identifying someone's religious affiliation based on their ethnic appearance. I know a number of South Asians in this country who are Hindus or Sikhs - or even some who are Christians and whose family had been Christians in India, not simply recent converts. Many of these people are likewise in highly visible professional positions, and the Hindus especially can be hard to distinguish from Muslims from that area of the world. (And for that matter many Westerners find it difficult to tell the Sikhs from the Muslims - though there are a number of telltale signs if the individual observes their religion, if you know where to look. The Sikh religion is a syncretic religion quite different from Islam, and in many ways more compatible with a Western outlook).

Conversely there are quite a few Muslims who are of European or Chinese ethnicity, contrary to the stereotype.

Al-Qaeda ‘planning big British attack’
Dipesh Gadher (excerpt)

AL-QAEDA leaders in Iraq are planning the first “large-scale” terrorist attacks on Britain and other western targets with the help of supporters in Iran, according to a leaked intelligence report.

Spy chiefs warn that one operative had said he was planning an attack on “a par with Hiroshima and Nagasaki” in an attempt to “shake the Roman throne”, a reference to the West. . .

The report continues: “Recent reporting has described AQI’s Kurdish network in Iran planning what we believe may be a large-scale attack against a western target.

“A member of this network is reportedly involved in an operation which he believes requires AQ Core authorisation. He claims the operation will be on ‘a par with Hiroshima and Naga-saki’ and will ‘shake the Roman throne’. We assess that this operation is most likely to be a large-scale, mass casualty attack against the West.” . . .

Al-Qaida’s No. 2 praises al-Zarqawi
By ASSOCIATED PRESS (excerpt)

. . . Al-Zawahri - Osama bin Laden’s deputy in al-Qaida, who is believed to be hiding in Afghanistan or Pakistan - said he was making the video to mark the fourth anniversary of the December 2001 battle of Tora Bora, in which US forces besieged bin Laden and al-Qaida fighters in mountainous caves of Afghanistan.

He denounced Bush as the “Caesar of Washington” and accused him of lying about progress in the war on terror. . . .

(excerpt)

On May 5, 2007, Islamist websites posted a video, produced by Al-Qaeda’s media company Al-Sahab, of a 67-minute interview with Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri. The following is a summary of the interview.

“The Empire of Evil is About to End, And a New Dawn is About to Break Over Mankind”

Al-Zawahiri begins the interview by announcing that “the empire of evil is about to end and a new dawn is about break over mankind, [which will be] liberated from the Caesars of the White House and Europe and from the Zionists.” He adds that the imminent defeat of the Americans in Iraq and the establishment of the Islamic State of Iraq are important milestones on the way to reviving the Islamic Caliphate. . .

New al Qaeda Tapes Feature U.S. Capitol Under ‘Attack’
May 22, 2007 2:01 PM (excerpt)

“The Islamic State of Iraq...March Toward Washington” reads the headline in English superimposed over a digitally created scene of the U.S. Capitol under attack . . .

“This is a disturbing new trend,” says Laura Mansfield, an Arabic expert who monitors jihadi videos on the Internet. . .

“It may be that this new imagery is designed to motivate terrorist activity in the U.S., but it is certainly intended as a recruiting tool and perhaps intended to reassure al Qaeda’s jihadi followers they haven’t forgotten their goal of an al Qaeda attack on Washington, D.C.,” she said.

That's interesting, thanks Velveeta. A post from that threat states:
From KHOU, our local CBS affiliate, some more info is offered: “The canister vanished from the second floor of the plant in the 16,700 block of Glenagle Drive North. It is 150 pounds of stainless steel and is marked chlorine gas.”

To me that indicates it is not a drug addict looking for scrap metal to sell. Why hassle with lugging 150 pounds from the second floor when there are probably easier pickings for scrap.

Metro was packed, no noticeable increase in security in the stations or on the trains... though, the extra added are supposed to be plain clothed, so I might not notice them anyway. Packed is an understatement, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it so crowded.

Tornado watch here in DC now too, so lots to watch for. ;)
