Prison tries to unravel invasion of mystery troops

CANON CITY, Colorado (AP) -- No, they weren't coming to the rescue. Military officials said 25 heavily armed parachutists who landed in a cornfield on the grounds of a Colorado prison last week were on a training mission but landed about 3 miles off target.

"Those were Special Operations Command forces conducting routine training," Army Col. Hans Bush, a spokesman for the command at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, said Monday. He declined to identify the units that landed at Fremont Correctional Facility but said the target was Fremont County Airport.

The special operations troops, which could include Navy Seals or Green Berets, began dropping from the sky at about 4:50 a.m. Thursday. Guards on duty, who are trained to watch the skies following a helicopter escape in 1989 from a prison near Ordway, Colorado, held their fire after noticing the parachutists were soldiers.

Guards who stopped the men and asked for identification were presented with documents that identified them only as Defense Department employees, Colorado Department of Corrections spokeswoman Katherine Sanguinetti.

"We don't know who they were and I'm not sure we'll ever know who they were," she said. "Everyone acted appropriately."

The parachute troops were armed only with rubber training bullets.

It brings back memories for me, too. A long time back, I remember the Monday after we lost a football game, scores of Cuban paratroopers landed at my high school. My history teacher thought they must have been way off course, but they shot him. Thankfully my brother Jed came back and picked me up, along with a few others. Got some supplies at old man Morris’ place out on the highway, then hid out in the mountains and fought a guerilla war. They were talking about dropping some Green Berets in to help us out in the springtime, but it never came to pass. Eventually that war, like all others wars, ended.

Or did I dream it all? Anyway, this story about paratroopers landing in Colorado reminded me of it. :0

About a year ago a couple of teams from the 3d SF Grp were doing a practice jump in the wee hours of the morning in NC and they landed on an Interstate. I had visions of the people driving down that interstate watching these guys coming down. Fortunately, nobody hurt.

I was wondering when someone would put together unknown parachutists, Colorado and “Red Dawn.”

Dangerous situation defused by people that kept their cool. Armed men dropping on a jail perimeter is never a good thing.

Fortunately, these troops didn't drop on a school or somesuch nonsense. The kids would have needed grief counselors because they saw guns, the troops would have been excoriated in the press for looking, well, like troops, and the administrators would have all needed to change their panties.

That was a great movie to a 13 year old boy. I caught it on TNT the other night. It hasn’t improved with age, unfortunately.

This past Saturday, I was driving up 31W through Fort Knox and I saw a trio of soldiers jump out of a Blackhawk over Godman Airfield. It was kind of hard to keep driving when you are rubbernecking like that, so I pulled over to the side and watched.

The last guy out the door caught a gust of wind and almost ended up landing on the highway. The first two landed up on the airfield, but the third guy landed right beside the perimeter fence, about fifty feet from the road.

It’s called a ‘Butter Bar’, a 2nd LT, someone who went to school for 8 weeks to learn how to get you killed faster then the enemy ever could.

Some buddies and I used to ride back there to the
drop zone at Bragg to watch a big drop.It was amazing
to see.

As soon as they starting landing the ambulances began
picking up the injured.

Hope your boys leg wasn`t busted too bad.I sympatize
with a broke leg after getting one myself.Mine hurt
for years
