He’s right and he’s wrong. We need immigrants and we need more citizens or our social security system will collapse. However, his bill was not the answer.
How many illegal aliens are not working in the U.S. now because the Senate failed to pass his bill? None, I think.

As someone who has paid tens of thousands of dollars into Social Security, I would love to see it collapse completely. And I wouldn't even want a refund. I wish the government, right now today, would stop cutting social security checks and stop taking social security out of paychecks. And I honestly don't care if you are 55 years old and have paid into the system for the last 40 years. Tough luck. Just end it.

I think you're right, TT. We do need some unskilled workers in this country; it is the "curse", I guess, of an educated citizenry.
I just wish the conservatives would move on: Bush knows he lost, and though he had a point to make, he should have put border security first.
The War on Terror, tax cuts, a conservative judiciary and the protection of innocent life are things most conservatives can agree with the President on...perhaps we can focus on those things now.

and we need more citizens or our social security system will collapse Thus the reason the entire SS system must be privatized. And your benefits should be directly tied to the ACTUAL contribution you made - much like an IRA/Annuity is.
Nothing in the US Constitution mandates (or even authorizes) the Federal Government exact a tax on working citizens to pay for retirement benefits for retirees and those who cannot (or claim to not be able to) work.

One more insipid insult to my intelligence. Bush really has hit the skids. He and Chertoff are pissing me-off.

And how may Legal Citizens and Legal Immigrants are working now? More, I think.
I agree with your Tag, but as a resident of central Texas I am still leaving all my windows open and having to cover with a sheet at night. Thank goodness for lower AC bills this year.

In other words, rather than try and find a permanent solution to the problem, let's see if we can keep the ponzi scheme going a bit longer?
