The German Air Force would need to gain air superiority over the English Channel to mount an invasion of England. The problem was the German Navy lacked the means to take on the Royal Navy and it was short of landing craft to ferry large numbers of soldiers across the straits. And Hitler's mind was always on the coming conflict with the Soviet Union. The Germans hoped bombing Britain would break its will to resist their domination of the Continent but it didn't have the desired effect. As they say, the rest was history.

And Hitler's mind was always on the coming conflict with the Soviet Union. The Germans hoped bombing Britain would break its will to resist their domination of the Continent but it didn't have the desired effect.

The turning point in the Battle of Britain, came after Berlin was airbombed for the first time.

Hitler was so angered by the bombing, that he switched from tactical bombing Britain to terror bombing. This had two negative effects for the Nazis. First, it strengthened British resolve, and second, stopping the bombing of military installations allowed the British military to regroup.

That is where the Battle of Britain was lost for the Germans.
