Boise St. star's wedding draws racist threats (Ian Johnson)

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - The Boise State running back who scored the winning points in the Fiesta Bowl, then proposed to his cheerleader girlfriend on national television, says he has hired security for their wedding because of racial threats.

Ian Johnson, who is black, and Chrissy Popadics, who is white, are due to be married Saturday in Boise. Since his Jan. 1 proposal, Johnson said, he has received phone calls, letters and some personal threats from people who object to their marriage plans.

"You take it for what it is - the less educated, the less willing to change," Johnson, 21, of San Dimas, Calif., told the Idaho Statesman for its Tuesday editions. "But we're not acting like we're naive to all the stuff that's going on. We know what's been said. We're going to make sure we're safe at all times. It's an amazing day for us, and we'd hate to have it ruined by someone."

"It's really sad because a lot of people that are probably doing it are the same people who were cheering me on," Johnson said.

Idaho is not like Seattle or Portland.

Idaho might not be but Boise is much more liberal than you might think. Democratic mayor to start with.

Scarlet Letter...a book by Nathaniel Hawthorne

the protagonist is a lass impregnated thru an adulterous affair with her clergy (a Cotton Mather type...Mather was a hell and brimstone sort who wrote fiery sermons for the Congregationalists in the 1600s here)

She is found out and made to wear a letter A on her bodice when in public to pronounce her sin to the world

as a metaphor or analogy I use that scenario to describe out modern obsession with white on “any minority” racism....a racism I find exceedingly rare and exploited when found found or invented

most troubling to me is that many minorities are openly hostile to “white culture”....whatever that is.....and no one hardly cares if at all...like we deserve it

this crippling guilt disorder makes it impossible for us to deal with any problem regarding anything racial, ethnic, religious even sexual preference minority for fear of being labeled a hater or bigot

it makes it nigh impossible to address illegitimacy, WOT, Islam, homosexuality, the family and many other issues of our time

that’s my opinion anyhow.....I grew up in an earlier less sensitive age than many here

Admitting the problem is the first step to getting well. Let me know when you are ready to take that step. ;^)

(Best of luck this season, except, of course, when we play your teams!)

Better to ignore them so they don’t get the publicity they want. I can’t imagine anyone, even a racist, being stupid enough to get near the wedding party. Can you imagine the number of young men who are 6’5, 285 pounds and who can bench press 400 pounds who will be in attendance? ;^)

I was curious about the Jewish aspect.

I have personally known maybe 6 white man/black wife couples in my life and 4 were where the man was Jewish. I think part of that is the secular Jewish tradition of not being traditional...plus most are urban and this is more common in an urban setting.....very few country Jews...not since the antebellum South anyhow back when many Sephardic Jews actually were in agriculture believe it or not.....a bit of Tikkun Olam too plays into it

We occasionally go to dinner parties here with a sorta mixed couple where he is very cafe au lait and raised well off and very educated and a good earner. She is more Ya Ya Sisters earthy and light skinned too....quite attractive in a Thandie Newton way. He is the regional director for a very large computer manufacturer which shall remain nameless and makes at least probably 500k per year...they have no kids

anyhow....she recently left him for a very crude ghetto type guy much younger who may very well be into illegal things...the man was crushed...he loved her dearly...and it’s easy to see why

She told my wife the husband wasn’t black enough.....can you imagine that? My wife was sort of taken aback....they were so much like us culturally that we never really thought that way about them and kinda liked that precisley to be candid. He was big GOP locally....maybe that did it. Funny thing is that when the wife went from Beyonce hair to groomed dreadlocks my wife said she thought she was having an affair...never underestimate a women’s 6th sense

Anyhow....it showed me once again that the lure for folks sometimes to be who they “think” they identify with can be strong....the way even conservatives latino leaders rally for amnesty proves that

I don’t think we as a culture recognize that.

Thanks for taking the time to reply....you sound very grounded and I’m happy for you.

that book....which is a sorta lib Oprah book is called the Color of Water (it’s on my wife’s book club list...she groans..lol) This child is a product of the same situation as you and was often torn and confused a bit where to fit in and would ask the mom what color is God...and she would say God is the color of water...I think that’s nice and a pretty saavy thing to say to an inquisitive kid

I lived in many parts of the world where I was a white dot in a black or brown sea and so I know a lot at least about the casual aspects of this.....there is a lot about women of any race or ethnicity that is a constant...lol....no doubt about that. God hardwired them like that

Lots of white supremacist enclaves in Idaho, as well.

Not really.

There are probably less here than in most otrher places in this country.

Idahoans are very hospitable folks, even to Californians.

Idaho is home to the Aryan Nations bunch as well

First of all they weren't from Idaho, and Idahoans helped drive them out years ago.

As well as the fact that every single State Senator and Congressman/gal in the city limits of Boise is a Dim also.

Delphinium might correct some of the finer points of this, but I think a lot of that reputation about Idahoans being Nazis and white supremacists began when Mark Fuhrman bought a place up in Sandpoint during (or maybe it was after) the OJ trial.

I also remember the MSM and others passing off the whole Ruby Ridge scandal as “oh, that Randy Weaver was a white supremacist”. But you never see that sort of thing anywhere south of Post Falls.

(No offense to the Northern Idahoans on the Ping list or that have posted in this thread. :) ).

There are a lot of Freepers in "mixed" marriages or families. Believe it or not, we even had a ping list years ago that lasted a short time.

I don’t mean to be personal but was your dad Jewish? they seemed to be more likely for that in my day...

No. My dad is Catholic.

I think it depends on the region where you live. In my area, there are a lot of people of Italian, Irish, Jewish, and African ancestry. Most of the "mixed" marriages are either black/Irish or black/Italian. My husband and I are the latter. Italians and many of the Irish are Catholic.

The Jewish families we know want their children to only marry into other Jewish families. I realize there are some African-Americans who are Jewish, but I don't know one Jewish person married to a black person.

Yes, there are Catholics who are racist. I know some. But, in fact, the Catholic doctrine itself teaches that racism is a sin. Catholic children are taught about Saint Martin de Porres who was the son of a black mother and a Spanish father. His father abandoned him as an infant because he "looked black."

Also, years ago, it was the Catholic Church that filed in favor of the couples in Loving v. Virginia and Perez v. Lippold, which was the first case. Perez was about two Catholics who wanted to marry. Laws against such marriage seemed to be rooted in Protestantism at the time.

I just wanted to add: Of the Freepers I’ve come across here in “mixed” marriages, the vast majority were white men.
