Hillary Clinton's handlers are so outraged - outraged! - at a newspaper story musing over her showing a little cleavage that they're urging equally miffed supporters to fight back by stuffing cash into her coffers. "Would you believe that The Washington Post wrote a 746-word article on Hillary's cleavage?" senior campaign adviser Ann Lewis said yesterday in the fund-raising e-mail.
"Frankly, focusing on women's bodies instead of their ideas is insulting. It's insulting to every woman who has ever tried to be taken seriously in a business meeting," Lewis wrote.
The offending Post article appeared last week in the Style section after Clinton delivered a higher education speech on the Senate floor that was carried on C-SPAN2. The story's focus wasn't student loan policy.
"She was wearing a rose-colored blazer over a black top. The neckline sat low on her chest and had a subtle V-shape. The cleavage registered after only a quick glance. No scrunch-faced scrutiny was necessary," The Post reported. "There wasn't an unseemly amount of cleavage showing, but there it was. Undeniable."
A longtime Democratic operative who is no Clinton fan said it wasn't surprising that Team Hillary would try to generate a sympathy backlash - and then ask for cash to help ease the pain.
"She looks for every opportunity she can get to be the victim. It's her playbook," the party source said. "The question is whether Hillary-as-victim leaves her looking more like a martyr or a whiner."
A Republican operative mocked the controversy as "a tempest in a B-cup."
Others believe Team Hillary's pique is justified.
"They're right to object," said feminist author and activist Naomi Wolf. "It's so trivial for the press to waste its time on this while our sons and daughters are dying in Iraq."
The campaign's anger over the article "is a natural reaction," added Georgetown University linguistics Prof. Deborah Tannen, author of "You're Wearing That?"
"She might as well turn it to her advantage, and it is an advantage - and it is also maddening," Tannen said. "It's a real double bind that men don't face."
But the press did giggle this week at John Edwards for wearing skintight Lycra cycling shorts while riding with cancer survivor and seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong.
Clinton, meanwhile, was back in her standard uniform yesterday: dark pants suit with a ruffled, frilly shirt that bared nothing.
What tower?
The left turning on its own. But not to worry if you are a Clintonista, this is the left’s idea of an insightful hit piece. The cleavage story is actually good news for Clinton. Instead of obsessing on her appearance they could be doing research on what is in Clinton’s insides, such as her criminal past like looting savings and loans, trading pork bellies on inside information, and having members of her posse disposed of in DC parks.
Hillary Clinton has worn only a crusted black pantsuit for 6 years.
She all of a sudden dresses in a less covered manner and you complain when people notice ?
Which is exactly the response you were looking for in the first place, isn’t it ?
Otherwise, why dress her differently ? Any other reason doesn't pass the smell or laff test.
LOL
Gee. Do ya think she flashed us all on PURPOSE? Nothing like setting yourself up to be a “victim” is there? Especially when your “handlers” tell you it’s time to play the “Sex Card.” *ROLLEYES*
That woman is as unattractive as (fill in the blank.)
I actually prefer her in “Old Crusty” or one of her “Chairwoman Mao” pantsuits. I get confused when that leopard changes her spots, LOL!
Forgot to add, no worry’s about “cleavage” on her, huh?
A woman who says nothing about a bronze piece being made of her breasts should not be saying anything. Wonder what it is they are distracting us from because this is silly.
"Frankly, focusing on women's bodies instead of their ideas is insulting. It's insulting to every woman who has ever tried to be taken seriously in a business meeting," Lewis wrote.
Is not dress an expression of ideas; how one covers their body? Or in this case, how a small part of the body wasn't covered, instead exposed.
If the clothes don't make the person then a bathing suit will do (ack!) or a frump old house coat, or sweat pants and flip-flops. But cleavage!?!...Give us break Hillary.
We've heard the media quip that he's dressed smartly; or she was dressed down. How about she's dressed like a cheap slut chasing a two dollar bill through a trailer park?
Somebody fit that woman a burka.
Well, we would be on to something!
Don’t need an X-ray to see that she’s got real healthy lungs.
“This is an answer to the ‘Hillary is a man’ bit.”
Exactly. They’re 100% predictable!
Not at all a pleasant experience.
Another reason I don't read the WarshPost anymore.
No one missed anything!
“She takes every opportunity to play the victim- it’s in the playbook”
Wow, that says it all.
Same thing that I saw. Showed some t, nah, cleavage, but looked more like she was hungover to me..and this is going to be the next president?????
I'm sorry, I was looking at..........
What were you saying?
j/k
Y’all are all gonna go blind talking and thinking about this...
More like scales, no?
