Eminent Domain (essay by Fred Thompson)
I'm with Fred ^ | 07/30/07 | Fred D Thompson

Last week, California officials in National City voted unanimously to use eminent domain to take over more than 600 properties—including a nonprofit youth center dedicated to keeping local kids out of gangs and off the street. They plan to give this land to local private developers for a group of condominiums.

It’s said that a man’s home is his castle, but across America some property owners are being rooked by local bureaucrats and politicians and having their private property confiscated by local governments for the supposed public good.

Most people probably think that if they buy a home or a small business that they will get to keep what they purchased. After all, the Fifth Amendment guarantees that “private property [shall not] be taken for public use, without just compensation.”

But in 2005, the Supreme Court, in Kelo v. New London, held that the government could take private property – even a person’s home – and give that property to a large private corporation for that business’s private use. As Justice O’Connor wrote in her scathing dissent, “Under the banner of economic development, all private property is now vulnerable to being taken and transferred to another private owner, so long as it might be upgraded – i.e., given to an owner who will use it in a way that the legislature deems more beneficial to the public – in the process.”

Not surprisingly, the public responded to Kelo with outrage. Since then, numerous states passed legislation aimed at curbing an abuse of eminent domain powers. In the 2006 election cycle, 12 states held referendums proposing to limit state governments’ abilities to confiscate property a la Kelo. Ten states approved the proposals, each with strong majorities.

But a bit harsh...

They are not lying per se, their perspective is skewed. They have this notion that 2% in the polls is a damn good start several months in...

That’s what they do: post slander, lies and half truths, all in the “I really hate to do but” when the truth of the matter is they have to bring Fred down because their candidate is in the sewer in the polls.

Why must you Thompson bashers constantly lie and misrepresent who and what you are?

You'd think with all these FRed 'supporters' jumping ship my FReepmail would be overflowing with requests to be removed from the FRed List. Not happening for me. How about you, Politicalmom? Are you so overrun by ship-jumpers you haven't had time to notify me?

Now, nearly two weeks ago, members of both parties in Congress introduced legislation in the House that would deny federal economic funding to state and local governments upon a finding that those governments had abused their power of eminent domain by seizing private property that would be used for private economic development.

That's all well and good except that a state's taxpayers have been abused by eminent domain are going to get abused again by the feds not returning some of money that taxpayers paid the federal government.

That's always been a problem when the feds hold taxpayer dollars and thus taxpayers hostage when the state doesn't act how the federal government wants it to do. It's the feds saying, "jump though our hoops backwards and then we'll return you your money." Accept they wouldn't say it that way because they think it's the government's money that they, the parasitical politicians and bureaucrats get to do whatever they want with.

Noble laureate Milton Friedman put it this way:

"There are four ways in which you can spend money. You can spend your own money on yourself. When you do that, why then you really watch out what you’re doing, and you try to get the most for your money. Then you can spend your own money on somebody else. For example, I buy a birthday present for someone. Well, then I’m not so careful about the content of the present, but I’m very careful about the cost. Then, I can spend somebody else’s money on myself. And if I spend somebody else’s money on myself, then I’m sure going to have a good lunch! Finally, I can spend somebody else’s money on somebody else. And if I spend somebody else’s money on somebody else, I’m not concerned about how much it is, and I’m not concerned about what I get. And that’s government. And that’s close to 40% of our national income.

The individual and business owner will spend his money to protect his customers better than the government will.

What Fred should have in mind is for the feds to return the "hostage" money (fed tax dollars) directly to the citizens rather than withhold it from the State government. That sends a federal message to the state government to stop abusing its citizens.

Make no mistake. This is a power struggle.

Those that aren't their own enemy will see that the following author gets it and not shoot the messenger for his spot on target message. Political Power and the Rule of Law.

Interesting, Fred speaks of National City, CA in the first sentence.

It’s next door to my city in San Diego County ~ right in Duncan Hunter’s back yard.

National City touts iself as a sanctuary city.
Wonder if the eminent domain abuse is to ultimately help illegals with low income housing.

Am wondering if Fred might be indirectly issuing a challenge to Duncan Hunter to address this.

Maybe that’s a stretch.

As a supporter of Fred Thompson I have one question: Is it true or not that Fred has hired Spencer Abraham as his “Campaign Manager” or senior adviser? If so, then I can no longer support Fred.

You've been reading too much frap the last few days. Spencer Abraham was brought in to help buid the campaign apparatus, as he did successfully with the GOP in Michigan several years ago. He was not brought in as a Campaign Manager, or, as far as I know, in any advisory capacity. If you are truly a 'Fred Supporter' as you claim, you may have noticed that Fred doesn't need any 'advice' to render any personal opinions or political ideas.

Someone has decided to try to stir up trouble for Fred. The 'trophy wife' thing didn't fly, and neither did the 'lobbyist for abortion', so now they're attacking people he's chosen to help build a successful campaign, because they've shown their ability to do so in the past.

I haven't seen any evidence that Spencer Abraham's politics have anything to do with why Fred chose him, and I don't believe they will influence Fred in any way.
