Just what is a “progressive” anyway? I hear lefties use that term to describe themselves, but how is it any different from traditional leftism other than it has been rebranded as “progressivism”?

Modern Progressivism (sic) is a regression to the collectivism of Ludwig von Mises which was a regression to Karl Marx which was a regression to Rousseau and so on...

There is nothing new about progressives it is the same old desire by a few for feudal like power handed to them by a populace who thinks they are making things equal.
