I don’t know what caused the bridge to collapse, but here is an article snippet:

Another bridge failure mode is the pilings being scoured by current.

Don’t know how fast the Missisippi runs there.

"There's no kind of existing bridge defect that could be aggravated by a spell of 90F temperatures?"

Absolutely not! Engineering problems arise at temps lower than ~10 in steel and cycling around the freezing point of water. this is far from the boiling point of water, and the central concern is just that the different expansion rates are accomodated for in the design. Problems arise when people fail to analyze the design and situation. In this case it's the effect of the cracks, what caused them, and what the new stressesin the bridge look like. Other than the effect of water, the steel and concrete ect... follow the Kelvin temp scale. They had failures with stress redistributions that they failed to recognize.

The local news has been talking about it, but who knows if it was actually a structural issue or just “cosmetic,” time will tell.

I think it may turn out to be a combination of factors. Old Bridge. Traffic narrowed and slowed due to the construction. Maybe the jackhammer could have caused some harmonics. And I believe there was a train going under the bridge at the time.

It has been in the mid 90’s for two straight weeks.

The bridge is 40 years old.

It is a four lane bridge, down to one lane during construction.

Stopped traffic during rush hour.

C’mon........

But what the heck, we have a new choo-choo train!

Hip hip hooray.

Half the reason there were so many cars there I bet is because that choo choo train has screwed up the freeway in that area. I tried to turn around the other week and ended up going north on 35w thinking I could get back to south 35w by just going off an exit ramp and crossing the overpass, you know... but the southbound entry ramps were all closed just about up to Roseville.
