They make that threat every day. Was there anything specific about a bridge collapse?

all of those except the WTC pale in comparison to the Johnstown Flood disaster of 1880 which killed more than 2,200 people.

Weird coincidence that an Internet message appeared today from Al Qaida with photo-shops of Pres. Bush and Musharraf in front of a burning White House. That was from Obama, not Osama.
From I have seen and heard on TV, I doubt this was an act of terrorism, I believe the construction plus reports of some stress fractures(said to have been minor) is likely to have contributed to the collapse of the I-35W Bridge......prayers continue for all those affected by this disaster......

The pillars are on ground, not under the river. See pics upthread.

I don’t know. This is just devastating.
I just got a call from my mom. My nieces are in town visiting their dad, and they were on that bridge this afternoon.
I am just shocked. And relieved. And sad.

Every day you wake up is a good day. After that, it’s a combination of your choices and fate.

I prefer a ten-part mini-series, but you’re right. Most people want to wrap it up in the first hour, and move on to other exciting stories. Instant, total gratification.

Here is the next Interstate bridge that will probably fall into the water.
The old I-10 bridge in Lake Charles, LA

How horrible.
The quicker they are to say that it was not terrorism (when they clearly haven’t had enough time to investigate) the less likely I am to believe them.

Are you talking about the Scoharie (sp) bridge collapse? My hubby drilled there to see why it happened.

“But the change up to 90 F will almost certainly be insignificant until you get up to temperatures about 800 F.”
My 1948 Harley has steel pistons. They are regularly subjected to the temperatures associated with burning gasoline. (above 90) They are still running after 59 years.
Steel isn’t human. It doesn’t mind hot weather.

Mental note to self: don’t go to LA.
That is frightening.

Must be? Dr Biden mentioned it on Fox a few moments ago.

Thank you for the great explanation. That was beneficial to me. I’m tired of reading all the other posts about all the other possibilities, so I thought I would try to get true data on the bridge, depth, etc.
Thanks for the input. I, for one, appreciate it. :)

Prayers for the people of Minnesota and specifically, Minneapolis. God rest the souls of the ones who lost their lives. Prayers that the injured will recover and that no one else is injured.
This is truly a tragedy for all of us.

Again, though, I was not speaking about a bridge failing because of a 90+F heatwave. I was talking about that kind of heatwave combining with other defects to precipitate a failure.
I thought complex systems fail because of a combination of smaller factors which individually could not cause catastrophe alone.
