The Bay Bridge collapse wasn't all that serious -- for the reasons you mentioned.

The bigger catastrophe in that earthquake was the collapse of the elevated section of the Nimitz Freeway -- where one roadway ran on top of the elevated section over another one.

>It could be terrorism...<

I wonder how many illegals were working on the bridge. This is too huge to be anything else, IMO. Yes, of course, ‘Homeland Security’ came on to say “it doesn’t appear to be caused from terrorism.” Prayers going up for all the victims!

well one support pylon is still standing, cant see the pylons ont he toher side.

Based on that photo it appears that the main supports gave way, fell down, and tore loose from the main span. When that happened, there was essentially nothing to support the main span, and it fell into the water.

They were working on the de-icing system on the bridge.?

Is this the one that was closed and down to 1 lane last week?

Forgive if this is a stupid question, are there people in the River? I am thinking of the Air Florida crash in DC in the early 80s.

All of your comments were interesting and helpful. What you said below does make me wonder now about a possible cause:

“Also if this bridge was under construction, you can be that before the project took place, a team of civil engineers were all over it to make sure it could structurally take the construction project.”

I agree Fox is doing a magnificent job. They have excellent heliocopter shots and Shep is quickly feeding in live reports very expertly. I’m impressed. CNN and MSNBC are way behind. CBS is just now (8:25 p.m.)bringing “breaking news” with a sketchy report and no pictures. Pathetic!

"The Dept of Homeland security just said it was not. What crap they already know that?"

Isn't it obvious that the main purpose of "Homeland Security" is to reassure us sheeple that terrorism is never the cause of anything?

Watching streaming video now.

Absolutely amazing!

Local TV reporting -all- Minneapolis FD are being called in.

Heavy rain storms due in 1/2 hour at the scene.

Concern about sections still standing in danger of collapse.

WOW!

Homeland Security said they’re sending investigators, but that they have no reason to assume terrorism — but not ruling anything out.

Shep just said that Homeland Insecurity has said that they are monitoring the situation. (Watching Fox this time, probably).

I agree, Shep is great. He can only report as it comes in on his earphone.

Hubby is a former anchor and says this is good coverage in a crisis. I agree.

Also I think it was Trace that reported about the bus not going over, not Shep initiallly.

Could Shep Smith be any dumber.

His coverage is pathetic, isn't it?

Yes bridges do fall down. You’ve never heard of the Silver Bridge Disaster? I suggest you look it up.

People on the bridge reported hearing jackhammer-like sounds before the collapse. Multiple explosions of charges under the supports?

Or more likely the sound of rivets popping one by one. As soon as a critical rivet failed and dumped it's load onto surrounding rivets the whole structure would start to unzip.

I think terrorism is unlikely as a terrorist would run the risk of anyone on the construction crew spotting something amiss, and would do his dirty work in a less observable location.
