A quietly trotted-out program to remove guns from San Franciscos homes and streets netted 119 firearms over the weekend while 10 gun crimes were reported.
The Gifts for Guns program is a mayoral initiative that offered people cash cards and grocery gift certificates of $100 to $200 in a no-questions-asked trade for their unwanted firearms. Other cities, such as Los Angeles and Boston, have offered similar trades with mixed success.
San Francisco has recorded 64 homicides this year, compared with 48 at the same time last year and on track with recent record-setting homicide years.

On Saturday, city officials set up shop in the Civic Center, offering $100 Wells Fargo cash cards and $50 Safeway gift certificates in exchange for working firearms. The vast majority were either pistols or revolvers, commonly known as handguns, Mayors Office of Criminal Justice Director Lenore Anderson said Monday.
Participants were offered differing sums, corresponding to the desirability of each gun, Anderson said. They received $100 for rifles, $150 for handguns and $200 for assault weapons.
According to San Francisco police Sgt. Mikail Ali, who works with the Office of Criminal Justice, the drive netted seven illegal guns, including five assault rifles, a sawed-off shotgun and a sawed-off rifle.

That’s cool. A thug can go buy a gun for $50 and trade it in for 100-200 dollars! He can keep doing that over and over again and make more money in a day than selling drugs and he never even has to really give up his own gun....
That’s what I was thinking ... commit a crime .. maybe even kill someone, have your innocent gra’maw turn in the gun, get a c-note ... and even if they do a ballistics test ... gra’maw was annonymous ... wasn’t she?
What a great way for a dealer to get rid of tons of those Jennings and Bryco guns that nobody wants - have some friends buy all of those out, then take them to the buy-back place and immediately bankrupt them!
I wonder how many guns are stolen during this period.
Well, that’s it then. The police can all retire now that they have taken 119 guns off the street. The gangs are disarmed...
Wonderful. Figuring the odds of a particular gun being used in a homicide as 1 in 10,000 (which is a generous estimate, given that some guns are used in multiple homicides) this measure prevented 0.0119 deaths.
Trade in your gun, get a sex change.
I guess the gun-grabbers realized the program shouldn't be called a "buy-back" considering it wasn't they who gave the guns out to the public in the first place. Ah, lawyers...
Any working firearm is worth more than what they gave them.
Each of these needs a guy out front with a card table, a big sign reading “FREE GUN APPRAISALS,” and a Blue Book.
“...the drive netted seven illegal guns, including five assault rifles”
Whoa, they got five German Sturmgewehr 44’s? In one day? In San Francisco? That’s amazing! I hear those World War II-era “assault rifles” are hard to find nowadays.
