The fertility rates I provided are from the US Census figures. You must also remember that the fertility rates are only part of the story. We take in approximately 1 million legal immigrants a year, approximately 60% of whom are Hispanic. Another 500,000 to 1 million illegals cross into the US every year, most of them from Latin America. Hence the increase in US population growth, among the highest of developed countries at .89% annually, while our total fertility rate remains at replacement level, 2.09 children per female.

The US adds a net gain of one person every 10 seconds, which includes one international migrant (net) every 27 seconds. We have added 100 million to our population since 1970 and will add another 62 million in the next 23 years or the equivalent of the current population of the UK.

The face of America is changing with one of the greatest mass migrations in history. Hispanics, 1 percent of the population in 1950, are now 14.4 percent. Their total number has soared 25 percent since 2000 alone. By 2050, one in four residents of this country will be Hispanic. Half the children 5 and younger in the United States are now minorities. Hispanics and blacks have the highest high school dropout rates, which doesn't bode well for our future.

One thing that really is worrisome is the rate of out-of-wedlock childbearing. Was it 1965 or so when Moynihan said the black family was "in crisis" and "pathological" because of a 1:3 rate of out-of-wedlock births? That's what the white illegitimacy rate is right now ---1:3--- the black illegitimacy rate is 1:2, and Hispanic, 2:3.

Those figures are from memory, and from a few years ago: they're undoubtedly worse now.

Ironically, it was said back in Moynihan's day that widespread contraception and the final bully back-up of abortion would take care of all that. In fact it has become twice as bad.

That's because the unintended consequences of contraception and abortion were far more pervasive and penetrating than the intended consequences.

And the deadly-efficient unintended consequences were to trivialize sexuality, kick the bottom out of marriage, abandon and impoverish (many) women into "autonomy," and turn (many) men into such puny, triflin' things that they no longer fit, and are no longer called on to be, husbands and fathers of families.

Well, back to the subject of this thread: Hooray for Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar! Hooray for their wealth of well-raised children!
