It's usually the case that a medal which has been awarded to an individual is used as a model for the artist or photographer who produces the image used for the stamp.

That's because you can't just get one from Department of Defense ~ unless it's been awarded.

Hence, the stamp depicts an actual medal loaned by someone who earned it the hard way.
