Wow, I had not heard that the area around Sunset and Highland got hit hard. That’s scary. Getting tossed off my bed was exactly what I thought was going to happen to me in Sherman Oaks in 1994. I held on tight while my bed went up and down and side to side. I sensed things flying through the air, including my 20 inch television.

On my block, nine buildings came down but miraculously, the apartment building I was in just had surface cracks while the building next door was just plain bizarre - the walls bent to about a 45 degree convex angle and the floors did the same thing, they bent upward and then down like indoor mini-mountains.

A three story building two doors down became a two story building but fortunately, the tenants in the squished apartment were away on vacation.

I’m not sure why I’m still rattled because as you know a 4.5 is really no big deal. Maybe it’s because I’m so close to the epicenter.

Lucky you to be in New England now and it’s really good that you stay prepared.

ROFL! Hey you’re up early. How’s Mt. St. Helens? And how’ve you been?

A 4.5 under your house can be pretty intense...

Was it quick or long? If it was quick and a 4.5 then it was pretty intense. The magnitude is based on energy so it is both intensity and length. The shorter the length, the more intense for the same magnitude.

I live near the last big one in San Luis Obispo county. It was something I hope not to experience anytime soon again...

I was in Sherman Oaks in the 94 quake. Now I'm South of Northridge. This was surprisingly rough for such a small quake. I'm still a bit rattled, lol. Nothing fell but the neighborhood is all awake.

Yes. This one really got to people. I have been on other blogs after this happened and some seasoned veterans (up in your area) are freaking with this one. I think it really had to do with that very strong, violent jolt and also the noises--of course the shaking was not good, but violent jolting is very scary, especially if noise is involved. It has been felt from Santa Barbara (II & III's) to Long Beach (same intensities). I am seeing it now reporting as a 5 in Chatsworth and Northridge.

St. Helens is as quiet as you can expect an active volcano that blew up with like 18 Megatons of force can be.

Been pretty good. Car work (66 Impala), truck work (84 Blazer S-10), Garden, pressure washing my roof, upgrading DB2 and dasd management...

Decided I was falling in luv with a gal that works at a store near me and about the time I get enough courage to do something she’s gone...

Same old sh*t, I guess!

Here it started out as a sharp jolt, then it built up in shaking, up and down and side to side, and it also built up in intensity. The direction of the shaking in this quake, and the intensity of the shaking was strange.

It was beginning to seem as if the intensity was going to continue increasing and I had just wondered how bad this was going to be, that feeling of “uh oh, this one is going to be a bad one!” and suddenly the shaking stopped.

Thanks for the feedback on everyone’s reactions.

It will be interesting to hear local seismologists talk about this quake in the morning on the news.

Hey that’s good to hear that you’ve been busy working, doing some creative things working on cool cars (wow a 66 Impala and a Blazer - cool!) and gardening is great, and even falling in love, often times much like an earthquake but still all good.

Has Strat showed up yet to tell us there is no possible way shaking here could be related to shaking in Malaysia?

Indonesia, not Malaysia.

There are approximately 20-30 earthquakes per day on the earth as big or bigger than this one in California. Any day you have a M7+ quake in the world, you're going to randomly have a bunch of 4.5 or so unrelatedquakes in other places in the world.

I'ts not that there's NO WAY they're related, it's just very unlikely because you don't need an exotic explanation for a 4.5 in California.

Emergency preparedness at a bare minimum:

Shotgun, flashlight and H2O

Good for zombies and earthquakes! I would recommend you get a couple of silver slugs--then you'd be ready for werewolves too!

Starter in the truck gave out like 2 years ago. I wuz busy enough to let it slide, but I went out one day and it had a flat.

So it was time to fix it or junk it.

Ever change the starter on one of those? You haven’t lived!

Gotta unbolt a brake line. Gotta remove a crossmember. Gotta disconnect the electrical off the starter. Gotta drop the starter. Gotta turn it around. Gotta manouver it close to where it’s supposed to drop out. Gotta put a jack under the oil pan and jack the block up off the frame about a quarter inch to finagle the witch out...

Hell, I’ve known dames that were easier...

But I’ll tell ya what, I {heart} that old Chevy stuff...
