I have been here in Japan almost 10 years... and this earthquake was at least the 2nd or 3rd largest/biggest I felt... a 1 on the scale wakes me up (VERY light sleeper all my life)... this one would have probably made me have to change my pants if I was actually awoken (still awake, trying to get my freakin` AMD MOBO working.. gor the past 2 months. I am about to give up on ASUS AMD MOBOs.. never failed me before, but after 4 video cards (about $400 each).. 6 RAM chips (about $100 each), and 2 sound cards... and numerous fans (about 8 supporting/cooling my "powerhouse" of a computer system... I am about to boycott ASUS... read 100`s of forums for the last 2, almost 3 months, about the same problems with the exact same symptoms... with no clear answers or tech support from them..))

Anyway.. back to the point... The ONLY time I turn on the TV (NHK), is after an earthquake to see the actual readings, damage caused, and where it was centered. (That`s about 3 times in the last 5 years)... The closest area that they mentioned (this is about 2 minutes after the actual EQ).. they said it was a 3.... ?!?! Being about the second biggest I have felt since I have been here.. a 3? anyway... Do I get like bundles of credit and money for being the first to post about this natural `global warming` disaster?! ... NO?! oh well... hey, I`m still alive ;)

(wasn`t a rant or rave.... just needed to let off some panic adrenaline.. thanks ;D)

MJ

We know you were freaked out and all, but might you have told us where in Japan you were sleeping?

Just wondering...

5.0 is reportable, so this just makes the list. In Alaska we usually notice a 5.0 if we are sitting down, but if on our feet might or might not.

Back in the spring or maybe it was last fall, I can't remember.Anyway, I was at my family's home in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park that is in North Carolina and Tennessee. There was a 1 or maybe 2 quake. It was what I imagined a bomb would feel like going off. I grabbed my babies and ran out of the house, for I feared that the drum of gas that supplies the cooking energy had for some reason blown up. Scared the heebiejeebies out of me.

I know what you are talking about with the adrenaline panic. LOL, I immediately hit the internet after ascertaining that nothing had blown up. (I even thought that dad's oxygen tanks had blown.) All that adrenaline makes for one yucky feeling, especially if all you can do is run around the house looking for a crater where the oil drum used to be. LOL

Stay Safe!

Did the roaches come out to play just before the quake, by any chance? I used to live in downtown Tokyo, working at one of the Mori Buildings, and saw this happen when the Richter 8 struck Chiba.

You have every bit of my sympathy my friend; pay no attention to these miscreants and their Godzilla jokes...

I went through my first earthquake, a 4.2 here in the Pacific Northwest a few years ago, and it scared the crap out of me. It didn’t last long, just long enough to make the computer monitor shake, and drive me under my desk at work.

Even though that one occured in daylight, I never looked at that building where I worked quite the same ever again...

1 or 2??? Here in California we might not even mention it in casual conversation if it’s below 4.5...
