Hurricane Dean Live Thread [Now Cat 4]
NOAA/NWS ^ | August 16 2007 | NOAA/NWS

Posted on 08/16/2007 4:43:17 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane warnings have been issued for Dominica and St. Lucia as Hurricane Dean races westward into the Caribbean Sea at 24mph. This motion should bring the center of Dean near the Lesser Antilles on Friday. The increased forward speed of the storm has lessened preparation time for Caribbean Islands in its path. Hurricane Dean has favorable conditions to develop into a major hurricane over the next several days.

The latest GFDL run shows a peak intensity of 170 knots, and then landfalling at 145 knots around the center of the Texas coast. I certainly hope that doesn’t pan out, and I doubt it will, because it is still the one outlier for a U.S. landfall. The rest are still putting Dean into Mexico.

Hey NN,

Thanks for the ping.

This thing looks like it’s going to hit Cayman. Do you know if Onyx still frequents FR...I was wondering if her daughter was still on the island.

"CNN says La. has declared a state of emergency?"

A state of emergency exists in Louisiana until the near-inevitable October election of Bobby Jindal (R) to succeed Gov. Blank-Stare (Duh).

About time they got it going early. Texas also has prep work going on, but no emergency yet.

Madam Blanco has declared a state of emergency, and asked the President for funds. Go figure.

I suppose they are a bit nervous, after Katrina. I agree it’s about time they paid attention, but really!

Glad you asked that - even tho I don’t have an answer for you. I had been missing onyx a lot, but thought we just weren’t crossing FR paths much because I’ve been having puter probs.

Her last post was early June. Rats. She gave the Dose to someone else. How sad. I thought it was because she was having cataract surgery, but it also seems there was an opus of sorts.

She may be with the others staying wide awake, but not sure about that - another place my puter probs won’t let me go.

Cayman is definitely under the gun - see this section for reports and updates from people there:

forecasters warned it could grow into a monster tempest with 150 mph winds before steering next week into the Gulf of Mexico, with its 4,000 oil and gas platforms.

Speculators are wiggy with anticipation.

Let’s don’t even talk about FEMA trailers. I’m still so disgusted over that. I feel a REAL investigation is in order about those trailers. Somebody, probably several somebodies, got very wealthy from building those horrible trailers. I would like to know who.

Well, it's official.

On the sat photos, Dean now looks really, really bad.

Pray for Jamica to have rasta power to repel the storm to either side of the island.
