Yep, that was quite a reunion. I wonder if the lion sensed familiarity through smell or sight first? Anyway, kinda reminds of my return home every evening. I’m convinced my dogs think I’ve been gone for months every MTWTHF.

My cousin, Mary, worked in a small zoo during high school during the late 1960's. She visited a few times when her kids were small, but had not been to the zoo for about 20 years when I visited her. We took my children for a trip around 1999.

My girls ran ahead to the Rhesus monkey cage where an old dried up male was sitting on the floor. He barely looked up at us and continued to pick at the leaves on the concrete in sheer boredom. Mary came up from behind us and he glanced at her. Suddenly, he sprang up onto the cage bars. He chattered and jestered wildly at her with great excitement. She called him by his name and they stood there for a long time "talking" to each other. There was no doubt that he recognized her and was happy to see her. It was remarkable.
