Great comment! You are so right. It’s all about liberals horrified by animal killing while they support baby killing.

I had thought the same thing. Maybe it can be given to a rescue organization so that they can house foster dogs.

I think what was meant was simply “black trash”, just like saying “white trash”. It’s not the whole race, it’s the individual.

I still find it interesting that a man that has killed dogs, for no reason, gets one year jail time and a guy who fixed basketball game scores can get 25 years.

It has a lot to do with the procedural posture of the two cases.

Vick basically surrendered in order to avoid having a worse superseding indictment handed down this week. That superseding indictment would have charged him with more crimes and exposed him to more prison time.

Also, possible local Virgina charges remain something of a wild card for Vick, as it remains to be seen whether he will be charged with additional crimes by Virginia and sentenced to do additional prison time beyond the federal sentence for those.

And Donaghy will certainly not end up actually getting a 25-year sentence.

But Donaghy will very likely do some more prison time than Vick, but we'll have to wait and see how much of a difference that is.

And ignore the invasion of our country. (not to mention the thousands of deaths caused by illegals every year)

Dog fighting has been apart of almost every culture historically for hundreds, if not thousands of years. British, African, Japanese etc. A large percentage of current breeds were created for that purpose.

Are all the techniques involved in creating a champion dog for fighting cruel, torturous and base? Absolutely. The worst examples being bait dogs (likely someones stolen family pet) and breading out undesirable traits; same thing is done to other non-fighting dog breeding too.

Are fighting dogs so dangerous that our government has an interest in keeping them out of our neighborhoods and communities? Yes.

My concern is why is this a Federal crime? Does the Federal Government have an interstate commerce concern here?

I’m also concerned that any kind of crime against animals can end up putting a human being in prison.

Dog fighting is awful. To torture animals for the fun of it, one has to be a sadist. I am appalled that several on this thread think it is okay. What kind of sick minds believe that just because there are injustices in other areas of our system, we should allow tormenting of animals.

I torture animals every Deer season. I once shot a deer, a bit off - my bad, saw the blood trail go into a thicket and heard some noise back in there. So I went to lunch came back 2 hours later thinking the deer was dead, it jumped up and damn near ran me over. One quick shot put it down for good.

Before you judge me or Vick of being an “animal abuser” do you know how cows are slaughtered for your $1 Big Mac? Yep - electrocution.

Ever seen a pork processing plant’s method of turning Wilbur into sausage links and your morning bacon you enjoy so much.

But, but those things are for food you might say. We don’t need to kill animals to live. My neighbor has been a vegetarian (he eats eggs, milk, cheese etc. though) and is healthier than I am.

So is it only morally wrong because it is for sport? Where is the outcry about the methods and techniques for horse racing, dog racing etc.???

Maybe Vick was in the wrong cause it was for a violent blood sport involving animals. But a violent blood sport involving people is OK? Boxing, Extreme Fighting, Martial Arts, Hockey, Football are all sports that come to mind.

I see so much hypocrisy in the case and it drives me nuts seeing a FreeRepublic thread turn into something I’m used to seeing from the Krazy KO’s.

If Vick spends one day in jail it is a travesty.

1. This should not be a federal case.
2. This should be a civil issue not criminal.
3. Animals are not people and themselves can not be victims. Therefore who is the victim here?

Then maybe for your own peace of mind, you should stay off these type of threads.

If someone puts a .50 slug in GeneralisimoFranciscoFranco’s favorite furry creature which he owns, is the crime against the cute little animal or GeneralisimoFranciscoFranco? Most laws that I’m aware of would require restitution to be made to the owner - not to the animal or the animal’s offspring.

Animals themselves cannot be victims, they have no right to life, liberty or the pursuit of happiness.

Can someone please tell me who the victim of Michael Vick (and associates) is?

1. This should not be a federal case.

It's a federal case because he violated federal law. (See the indictment)

2.This should be a civil issue not criminal.

You're shoulding all over yourself. And who is going to represent the dogs and why? According to your next assertion, dogs cannot be victims and presumably cannot be wronged either. Therefore no harm could possibly be redressed in civil court.

3. Animals are not people and themselves cannot be victims. Therefore who is the victim here?

No rational person elevates them to human status; it certainly doesn't follow that animals cannot be victims because they aren't human. Indeed it's vick who is the admitted victimizer, and therefore he must have a victim. The dogs ARE the victims of vick's heinous brutality.

Yowser. If you can read the charges against VICK and not muster any sympathy for those dogs and at least some disgust for VICK, then you have lost a part of you that makes you human.

And that comes from a fellow hunter, RC. One of the principles I take very seriously when I hunt is to do everything I can to make it a ‘1 shot 1 quick kill’ deal. Not perfect with that, but that is the goal. It is the ethical thing to do.

Slaughter houses use various methods to humanely kill the pigs and cows as well. There is no joy or cheering in a slaughter house. No one bets. VICK et al. enjoyed watching one animal maul another. There is nothing positive that comes from it. And yet, that was VICK’s thing when not playing football.

I find it disgusting. Its the Roman gladiators only with dogs: fight or die. Perhaps we should bring that back and force some groups of people to participate: maybe those on death row, or terrorists or child molesters or rapists or the illegal immigrants... you know... those we see as less then human and therefore unable to be a victim. HBO could put it on pay-per-view and make a killing.

He may have agreed to sell it, but the forfeiture laws generally cover the proceeds of sales, so he isn’t off the hook. Now that he’s going to plead guilty, look for the Feds to put a lien on the proceeds of ther sale of the property.

Well to do thugs can afford that too.

He’s no better than a thud.

Time to eternally ban him from the NFL, prison time and give someone else a chance. He’s easily replaceable.
