Vick Will Never Play Football Again
Townhall.com ^ | August 23, 007 | Matt Towery

It's been a hoot reading and listening to pundits and armchair legal analysts speculate on the fate awaiting Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick on charges of illegal dogfighting.

First the easy part: You can expect Vick to be handed a harsher sentence than the one year being bandied about by some observers.

The judge has already said the acts described by Vick's co-conspirators suggest "aggravating" circumstances. Often that means a sentence more harsh than lenient.

With Vick as the major, if not only, source of funding for the operation, it's likely the judge will view him as the ringleader of the enterprise.

The federal guidelines generally suggest a sentence of anywhere from 12 to 18 months for the crime to which Vick will plead guilty. My guess is that the judge may well hand down a longer jail term. Why? Because the men who pleaded guilty ahead of Vick will probably get the stiffer end of the suggested sentencing range, or about 18 months.

As mentioned by other Freepers discussing this case, the key to whether Vick will play again is the gambling

No, the key to Vick playing again is whether or not in two-plus years from now there is any team so desperate for a quarterback that they will take on a washed-up pariah who was overrated in the first place and who will alienate and disgust most of the team's fan base. There might be a team that needs a freak show attraction to sell tickets, but I don't know what team that would be.

The dogs should be removed from your custody.

It remains to be seen how this will play out. That said, I prefer to be more optimistic about the future. Without exception the MSM interviews only the rabble rousing self-appointed black leaders for the “Black take”. These include Al Sharpton, Jesse J, and the usual NAACP spokespersons. I believe these people will ultimately be left behind by the growing Black middle and upper class. Eventually, the bomb throwing Black racists will fade away. I hope and pray for the day that people are judged only by their character and what they do. I never understood the Black leadership insistance on equality with special treatment—i.e. job and school quotas. Wasn’t it the separate but equal thing in the South that ignted the civil rights movement?

I understand your point appreciate the fact that hanging out in the “hood” has given you a certain perspective the rest of us might not enjoy. The truth, however, is that no people in history have been handed more money, been given more deference, and been less condemned for egregious behavior than blacks in America today. That some have chosen to condone (and even participate in) miscreant behavior rather than take advantage of all they have been handed only makes their behavior all the more abhorrent and repugnant. When are those in the black middle class going to condemn and exponge the “gangstas” among them?

It’s amazing to see how fast this fella has fallen. Wonder if this will mean his Mama losing her million-dollar home in Suffolk VA. But with the real estate market having slowed to a screeching halt in SE VA, chances are she’ll get to keep it for a little while at least, as it’s definitely a buyers market.

Is this the OJ case all over again?

Bingo! Always making excuses for one's criminal/immoral behavior. I did get to watch a news clip of an interview with Vick's grandfather who lives in the Baltimore area...impression i got, though, was that Granddad wasn't making excuses for Vick and wondering out loud how Vick could throw away everything for dogfighting...his words: "that's not the Ookie I knew."

OK, he broke the law and should be punished, but sheesh, why the big deal?

Should the NFL stage a dog fight as halftime entertainment at the next Super Bowl if it's so harmless?

Right! What has the NFL really done about the criminal thugs that make up most of the Cincinnati bengals team?

That is uncalled for.

I am pointing out that we need to get some perspective. I am not defending the guy but is a significant jail term appropriate? Our society seems to value dogs more than children

I intentionally dropped that stinker to provoke civilized debate - something apparently beyond your means.

It ain't racial bias ... it's evil monsters bias.

These people didn't put down or even shoot dogs that were "losers" they tortured them. They like to see and if possible inflict pain, agony, blood etc.

I can't believe all or even most blacks think that way. Normal black people need to start speaking up. If the NAACP can't bring itself to do that, they need to head for the high grass instead of supporting these creeps.

If it really is a cultural thing, it's time to seriously adjust the culture.

Only a sadistic sociopath could enjoy something like that. Those who support Vick expose their own sadistic traits and lack of good character.

I don't think it OJ Redux but it is all about black racism.

Groups such as the NAACP are incapable of seeing past color.

You under estimate the ability of the American public to be turned by proper psychological management.

Yep, just like the author. Virtually everything the writer says here is wrong. He'll sit out a year and play in the NFL in '08. Book it.

Are you comfortable with a man who gets his giggles by electrocuting animals being a celebrity role model?

I'll confess to not reading up on the details of this case. I never had a problem with his being thrown out of the NFL, and depending on the depravity of his actions, I now realize that jail might be appropriate.

I just get annoyed when more people get their panties in a wad over animal abuse than child abuse and abortion.
