Unfortunately, there is a stigma in America and most black Americans have suffered indignities and lack of acceptance. I’ve seen it up close in a more personal way, being the only white guy playing basketball in a black neighborhood and/or hanging out after the game.
Sometimes I’ve felt that most people don’t understand what it can really mean to be black. You have to have heart because you need to overcome this and move forward with life in a positive way. Some do and some don’t. But so many growing up without fathers doesn’t help one bit.
From their perspective, a black guy not suffering the consequences like an OJ or Vick is a sort of balanced justice. I don’t believe they see it as justice. I think they see it as a counterbalance of sorts.
I understand your point appreciate the fact that hanging out in the “hood” has given you a certain perspective the rest of us might not enjoy. The truth, however, is that no people in history have been handed more money, been given more deference, and been less condemned for egregious behavior than blacks in America today. That some have chosen to condone (and even participate in) miscreant behavior rather than take advantage of all they have been handed only makes their behavior all the more abhorrent and repugnant. When are those in the black middle class going to condemn and exponge the “gangstas” among them?
Well said.I think that whole”counterbalance”argument is pretty close to the truth.
The attitude of many of the black people I know after the OJ verdict was basically.”One of US got over on the system like Y’all have been doing for so long”
I know very few blacks who REALLY believe OJ was innocent. But we all remember how Emmitt Till’s killers got off scot free. And they later ADMITTED doing the murder.
