$100 Bill to Get High-Tech Face Lift
Associated Press ^ | August 26, 2007 | MARTIN CRUTSINGER (AP Economics Writer)

Posted on 08/26/2007 6:23:24 AM PDT by decimon

WASHINGTON - After six decades in which the venerable greenback never changed its look, the U.S. currency has undergone a slew of makeovers. The most amazing is yet to come.

A new security thread has been approved for the $100 bill, The Associated Press has learned, and the change will cause double-takes.

The new look is part of an effort to thwart counterfeiters who are armed with ever-more sophisticated computers, scanners and color copiers. The C-note, with features the likeness of Benjamin Franklin, is the most frequent target of counterfeiters operating outside the United States.

The operation of the new security thread looks like something straight out of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This magic, however, relies on innovations produced from decades of development.

It combines micro-printing with tiny lenses - 650,000 for a single $100 bill. The lenses magnify the micro-printing in a truly remarkable way.

Move the bill side to side and the image appears to move up and down. Move the bill up and down and the image appears to move from side to side.

"It is a really complex optical structure on a microscopic scale. It makes for a very compelling high security device," said Douglas Crane, a vice president at Crane & Co. The Dalton, Mass-based company has a $46 million contract to produce the new security threads.

The redesign of the $100 is about one-third of the way complete. The bill is expected to go into circulation late next year.

The little lady used to work at a counter at Macy’s and now works with the LP section. I’m amazed every time she points out all the little details required in a legit greenback.

What’s the over/under on how long it will take the North Koreans to copy it? Six months?

I believe it’s 20’s inside the U.S., but this article points out the $100 is mostly counterfeited OUTSIDE the U.S.

You can also wash $5 and $10 and re-print them as $50 and $100. The point is to keep that securit strip you see when you hold a bill up to the light.

Women, minorities and poor to be hit hardest.
Bush's Fault!

I KNOW that makes no sense but that's irrelevant to the MSM (and moonbats). Somehow they'll say this hurts our (cough) 'protected groups'.

(bet there's a DU thread on it already)

Knowing government, it will probably cost us $110 to print a $100 bill.

If I wash $10 bills, it's because it looks like someone spilled orange Kool-aid on it.

The North Koreans, with Chinese help, must be adapting to the lastest recently updated 100-dollar bills?

“Look to your left, your right , your left” was also a song lyric from, IIRC, the fifties. Can’t recall the song.

Not easy keeping ahead of the counterfeiters.

"It combines micro-printing with tiny lenses "

For one hundred cyber dollars, where is the micro printing on your check?

Of course, between the fact that so many pieces of fiat currency are being pumped into the economy (with no real backing of their value) and the continued use of the old-style bills, that $100 bill isn’t really worth all that much...

And another thing - this “high-tech” security feature using “lenses” - how durable is it? Will it hold up to holding in a wallet, moisture, heat, etc.? Going to really upset folks if a little heat and pressure (like in a wallet) causes this security feature to not work - then the bill is turned down...

More like 2 cents, actually. All of our money is worthless. I honestly cannot understand why we have an economy to speak of. Our money has no actual worth. People only think it's worth something.

I knew that song............ after you wrote it I couldn't get it out of my head. I had to go looking for it:

(USAF) I've got a gal in San Antone:

I've got a gal in San Antone, Honey, Honey;
I've got a gal in San Antone Babe, Babe;
I've got a gal in San Antone;
Shes not like the one at home;
Honey, Oh Baby mine;
Go to your left, right, left;
Go to your left, right, left.

Repeat until reaching destination.
