Chavez vows revenge for Falklands war
The Sunday Times Online (UK) ^ | September 2, 2007 | Martin Arostegui

Posted on 09/02/2007 1:51:41 PM PDT by Jeff Head

In a new outburst of antiwestern sabre-rattling, President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela has threatened Britain with “revenge” for the Falklands war of 1982. The belligerent Latin American leftist warned last week that his recent build-up of sophisticated Russian and Iranian weapons would be used to destroy the British fleet if it attempted to return to the South Atlantic.

Speaking on his weekly television show Alo Presidente (Hello, Mr President), Chavez denounced what he described as Britain’s “illegal occupation” of the Falklands and repeated his call for a regional military alliance against Britain and the United States.

“If we had been united in the last war, we could have stopped the old empire,” Chavez said, as he gesticulated to maps showing how Venezuelan aircraft and submarines would intercept British warships. “Today we could sink the British fleet.”

Chavez has often expressed support for Argentina’s claim to the Falklands, but his latest broadside was notable for both its antiBritish vitriol and its unprecedented threats. He declared that British history was “stained with the blood of South America’s indigenous people” and demanded revenge for the “cowardly” sinking of the General Belgrano, the Argentine cruiser.

Western diplomats have long grown used to harangues from Chavez, who announced this weekend that he would negotiate with guerrillas holding dozens of hostages in Colombia, including three US contractors and Ingrid Betancourt, a French-Colombian abducted as she campaigned for president in 2002. But US and British officials have recently become more concerned by his willingness to lavish billions of dollars from Venezuela’s soaring oil income on military capabilities.

Lack of rule of law. Lack of respect for private property. Kleptocratic governments/elites.

Could be summed up by the psychiatric term "malignant narcissism"...

Well, if they did destroy the Sea Harries, as the tanknetter mentioned above (they have been retired), then their air defense situation for their fleet is worse than it was in 1982.

It just means all the more that they will need our direct military help (and not just logistics).

If we do not provide that help, then the UK, IMHO, in either case, would not be able to get past Venesuela on the way down to the Falklands.

Such a scenario as this could be one that was used to distract us, along with others. And, in fact, Venezuela and Argentina in those books did form the nucleus for the South American contingent of the belligerents we faced in the series.

Hello...we should make the JDAM and Khadafi attempt before putting any of our own on the ground.

I want the enemy to be begging us not to erradicate their people, not demanding compensation for damages to their national treasures.

Amen. Absolutely spot on.

Yes, where is Popeye when you need him?

That was great. My brother and I grew up watching the old-style black and white Popeye cartoons.

Thanks for the link.

He would use the SU-30s to intercept the UK fleet as it passes. They have plenty of range to do that.

Before that, if there were ar repeat taking of the Islands, he would probably station men, material, aircraft, and potentially subs down there prior to the British arriving.

I pretty much agree. It is hard to imagine anyone actually deserving some of our world leaders though. Your premise that folks vote in the idiots is valid. (At least I think that’s what your point is.)

Right on all counts, sir.

Socialist gubbermint prefers tax payers funds to go to no- hopers, serial single mothers, idlers and economic migrants handouts.

We’ve got some 200 pound JDams now that limit their destructive power to a narrow proximity. They can be set to go off above, at or below ground level. They’re accurate to between one and two meters. I say put one of those into the Chavez bedroom and be done with it.

In the morning we submit this press release. We are sorry to hear of the demise of Presidente Chavez, but appreciate very much his decision to return the oil company assets to their proper owners. We wish the very best to the Venezuelan population.

Then you send in oil company representatives and act as if nothing had changed since they were last in Venezuela.

Chavez has ordered 9 submarines from Russia to breal any naval blockade the US may attempt to put on him.

Why would he anticipate a naval blockade?

I summize that it is because he intends to get Ballistic Missle technology from NK and Iran.
Should Chavez get this technology all of the US would be within striking distance.

This is a very powerful card and one Chavez cannot pass up.

The U.S. will not be neutral this time...and Hugo really should be sure the argentinians are on board before he tries this...not that it will change much except the number of targets to engage.

Less than Chamberlain. Chamberlain declared war after Hitler invaded Poland. The present Brit PM would soil himself and apologize.
