Chavez vows revenge for Falklands war
The Sunday Times Online (UK) ^ | September 2, 2007 | Martin Arostegui

Posted on 09/02/2007 1:51:41 PM PDT by Jeff Head

In a new outburst of antiwestern sabre-rattling, President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela has threatened Britain with “revenge” for the Falklands war of 1982. The belligerent Latin American leftist warned last week that his recent build-up of sophisticated Russian and Iranian weapons would be used to destroy the British fleet if it attempted to return to the South Atlantic.

Speaking on his weekly television show Alo Presidente (Hello, Mr President), Chavez denounced what he described as Britain’s “illegal occupation” of the Falklands and repeated his call for a regional military alliance against Britain and the United States.

“If we had been united in the last war, we could have stopped the old empire,” Chavez said, as he gesticulated to maps showing how Venezuelan aircraft and submarines would intercept British warships. “Today we could sink the British fleet.”

Chavez has often expressed support for Argentina’s claim to the Falklands, but his latest broadside was notable for both its antiBritish vitriol and its unprecedented threats. He declared that British history was “stained with the blood of South America’s indigenous people” and demanded revenge for the “cowardly” sinking of the General Belgrano, the Argentine cruiser.

Western diplomats have long grown used to harangues from Chavez, who announced this weekend that he would negotiate with guerrillas holding dozens of hostages in Colombia, including three US contractors and Ingrid Betancourt, a French-Colombian abducted as she campaigned for president in 2002. But US and British officials have recently become more concerned by his willingness to lavish billions of dollars from Venezuela’s soaring oil income on military capabilities.

Which little buck-toothed anti-everything skank? Come on friend, that describes about 35% of the left male and female, LOL. BTW, you forgot the almost psychotic stare and funky glasses, for which Hillary is so infamous.

This could be an interesting test for the new British PM.

Is he made of the same stuff as Lady Thatcher or Neville Chamberlain.

You betcha. I forget just what part of Great Britain Hernan Cortez and Francisco Pizarro were from. I'm sure Huey would be glad to tell us.

Good point. We shall see.

I do not think they should wait until Argentina is emboldened by this idiot to create the crisis. Put Chavez in his place now as an object lesson to the Argentinans, and the Iranians too for that matter.

Chavez has been in bed with and playing footsies with them too.

I think the farthest south the British got was Belize back in their Colonial days.

Not sure of the Islas Malvinas/Falklands history. I think, though, it was to encourage settlement. There might be a few sheep ranches there...

I agree Jeff.

I have never understood folks like Belafonte, Asner and Glover. This nation and the freedoms it provides made it possible for them to become very wealthy. Instead of defending it and helping to preservie it, they do their damndest to destroy it.

What freedoms existed under Castro? What freedoms will survive Chavez? What freedoms existed in Russia or China? What freedoms actually exist in those nation’s today?

It’s so damned wierd to realize how the band (the so-called intellectuals (and members of the arts)) played on for Hitler and company, and to watch what is happening in today’s United States. These people to a man (nearly), dream for a rebirth of the ideologies that were responsible for killing 100 million last century, and preventing the freedoms of nearly half the planet’s population at the same time.

This is the proverbial child discovering fire for the second time. The child knows better than to put their hand in it again. The left hasn’t the common sense of that child, and this time it stands to burn not just one hand, but billions of complete bodies.

The left flatters themselves as the defenders of the planet. I would submit there is no greater threat to the planet than them, enablers of the worst mankind has ever seen, over and over and over again...

If he does nothing, he looks like the loudmouthed, braggart

Chavez has already taken hostages, the oil industry, the press and the populace. All the ingredients for a dictatorship have been assembled.

The hostages must be freed and Chavez must go.

One discretely placed JDAM right through his roof.

I understand from some Venezuelan friends that Chavez uses the old Castro tactic of sleeping in a different place every night. Paranoid as hell.

Sure don't want to sound racist...but is there something in the water south of the US border that leads to insanity???....or at least damaged brain tissue??

I left this comment on the news site:

Chavez isn’t the only one with an irrational vendetta against the UK. I’ve been saving these quotes from Iran for the past two years. Make no mistake, we’re in a war rather we like it or not :

an advisor to the new Iranian govt says his country’s objective is the destruction of the evil in the world perputated by England and the nations derived from England

commandant of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi, said on state television, “The final goal of the [1979] revolution is to create global Islamic rule and a regime of law to be led by the Imam Mahdi”. “God willing, the 21st century will see the defeat of the U.S. and the Zionists, and the victory of freedom-seeking nations of the world”.
