Vinegar will dissolve marble, really. Its cheap and does a lot of damage to the rock like what is shown. Vinegar will act like a real low molar acid to marble and is why homeowners with marble counter tops have to be careful with what one cleans the marble. Marble is laden with calcium and the vinegar puts the calcium in dissolution. One doesn’t need a strong acid or base to deface marble.
