Sports Memorabilia Dealer Implicates O.J. Simpson in Hotel Room Robbery
New York Times ^ | September 15, 2007 | STEVE FRIESS

LAS VEGAS, Sept. 14 — O.J. Simpson, the former football star who was acquitted of murdering his ex-wife, was under investigation Friday in what the police said might have been an armed robbery of sports memorabilia from a room at the Palace Station Hotel-Casino here.

Mr. Simpson denied that any crime had taken place. Instead, he told The Associated Press, he and some people he had met at a cocktail party staged a “sting operation” on Thursday night intended to retrieve memorabilia, including Mr. Simpson’s Hall of Fame certificate, from a dealer he said had stolen it.

Capt. James Dillon of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said that Mr. Simpson, 60, was cooperating with investigators and that charges, if any, would not come until at least Monday, after the Clark County district attorney’s office reviewed the case. The investigation “is in its infancy,” Captain Dillon said.

Captain Dillon would not describe the items involved other than to characterize them as “sports-related products.” Some, he said, were in police custody.

The dealer, Alfred Beardsley of Glendale, Calif., told detectives that Mr. Simpson and four other men, including two with guns, entered his room at the Palace Station around 8 p.m. Thursday and left with a trove of memorabilia including photographs and books signed by Mr. Simpson, lithographs of the San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana and Mr. Beardsley’s cellphone.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Mr. Beardsley told TMZ.com. “For him to come and do this sort of thing, I don’t know what’s wrong with O.J.”

“I couldn’t believe it,” Mr. Beardsley told TMZ.com. “For him to come and do this sort of thing, I don’t know what’s wrong with O.J.”

Let me explain. O.J. is a double-murderer and thug. In the interests of protecting society, he should be behind bars, at the least.

He was just in that room, looking for the "real killer" when he saw all that cool sports memorabilia.

That's all that happened.

including Mr. Simpson’s Hall of Fame certificate, from a dealer he said had stolen it.

That should be easy enough to verify. If it was stolen there should be a police report to that effect somewhere along with an inventory of all the other goods the currently unincarcerated double murderer claims were taken.

I thought the AP backed off the “sting” quote..

The problem here with the NYT is, there is no direct quote in the story.

In armed robbery the whole gang is guilty of armed robbery regardless of who actually held the firearm or other weapon.

There was a terrible accident right after the robbery. OJ was hit by a truck, and the poor trucker was looking under his truck...then moving away from it. A cop asked the trucker what the problem was? Trucker said I know I'm a hero for getting OJ, but how do I get the stink of OJ off my beautiful truck?

A few weeks ago, I drove to Florida and the visitor’s center offered “Free OJ” to all who stopped. :-)

Some of the posters on the other thread put this all together. Apparently Simpson had been using these guys to sell off his stuff in order to get around the Goldman family’s judgment against him. A few months ago, the family found about it and got the court involved. I suspect that they were going to be in line for the profits from these sales. So, Simpson, not wanting them to benefit, got the stuff back.

How ironic. How was this stuff “stolen” from OJ? Was there ever a police report about this “theft”? Or is this some of the stuff the Ron Goldman had seized from OJ because he couldn’t pay the Goldman settlement? Clearly, Goldman wouldn’t want to hang on to that stuff—he would be selling it to ‘sports memorabilia dealers.’

OJ needs to go to jail one way or another.... he butchered 2 people and now this....our practitioner/frauds marauding as lawyers and judges are putrid scum. OJ is a murdering criminal and he needs to serve his jail time for a long time.

Hopefully, OJ will “stay in Vegas” for a few years, at least! I don’t think the Nevada jury pool will bear much resemblance to that in LA, and his choice of attorneys is rather limited this time around.....
