Republican presidential candidate John McCain said Thursday that Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton isn't tough enough to be president.
Sen. McCain, R-Ariz., told about 600 conservatives that his Senate colleague showed her lack of fortitude Thursday by voting against a resolution condemning the liberal interest group MoveOn.org for a newspaper ad calling Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, "Gen. Betray Us."
"My conclusion is that if you're not tough enough to take on MoveOn.org and their attacks on a decent and honorable member of the United States military, then you can't be tough enough to be president of the United States," McCain said.
McCain was among several Republican presidential candidates who spoke to the Palmetto Family Council's stump and straw poll crowd by telephone. They emphasized the war, family, opposition to gay marriage and ending abortion.
Fred Thompson and Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, also spoke by telephone. Mitt Romney sent regrets by video, saying he was out raising money.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who appeared in the flesh, said it was important to be with voters to talk about their issues.
"If we want to end poverty in this country, the best thing to do is to keep strong families and strong marriages together," he said.
Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., also attended in person.
Huckabee won the straw poll with 206 votes. Paul finished second with 179 votes, followed by Thompson, a distant third with 43 votes.
The only candidate without a presence at the meeting was former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, whose campaign said he skips events linked to straw polls. The crowd booed his absence.
Huckabee (206) 39%
Paul (179) 33%
Thompson (33) 6%
Brownback (29) 5%
Hunter (25) 5%
Romney (14) 3%
Gilbert (12) 2%
McCain (10) 2%
Cort (7) 1%
Guiliani (5) 1%
I know a little bit about Gilbert, but I’m not at all familiar with Cort. Why can’t my candidate, Duncan Hunter, move up in the polls?
At least Paul did good.
Trust me, I know all about Huckabee. Ain't no way I'm voting for him, ever.
If you didn’t know before, straw polls are indicative of absolutely nothing. There only purpose is to give those with miniscule support and ridiculously low legitmate poll numbers a way to get their name in a headline.
I’m starting to wonder if he is using his campaign money to ship people around the country to vote in straw polls.
These are Straw Polls. They really don’t have much meaning other than the winning candidate sold more girl scout cookies.
Of course it’s meaningless this early, so are the national early all-in-the-name polling data. John Kerry was at 4% in those same national polls in December 2003, and as we all know he won.
Romney 30.8%
Giuliani 14.4 %
Thompson 13.4%
Huckabee 9.8%
McCain 6.6%
Pick your poll they are all equally meaningless unless of course you subscribe to the maxim of voting for the lesser of two evils rather than your principles. It amazes me how conservatives blindly believe liberals (duh! the whole mainstream media) that a candidate that stands for the conservatives principles is unelectable but miraculously the looney liberal fringe type candidates are of course perfectly electable. This all occurs by carefully putting out polls that a majority of the people will abide by because they are more enamored of having voted for a winner than the best person for the job!!! This is also how on the Republican side you keep getting nothing but RINO’s. You are letting the elitist liberal media pick your winners for you ahead of time. Is it at all surprising that they turn out not to be true conservatives???
I have to admit it is an easy way for the liberals to continue their power and the inexorable slide to elitist communism.

Well said. Self ping.
Long before Thompson was in my thoughts, I lost regard for the Republicans who participated in media "debate" gigs hosted by Chris Matthews and ol' Fluffy Top Stephanopolus -- wasn't he Clinton's former WH spokesman? Well more than a year in advance of the real race, and these people who expect me to think they're smart Republicans and leaders-of-men let themselves be adroitly maneuvered by Liberals. They all lost stature in my view.
Careful Finny, I include W in that RINO list since he refuses to seal the borders when we are at War. He is an elitist, globalist RINO. I am more inclined by principle to the supposed “bottom tier” candidates than the RINO Rudy or any of the others that the libs tell us are winning the polls. I am wary of Fred Thompson because though his timing is much more appropriate his Texas campaign chairman is George P. Bush....Globalist all the way!

What is a "globalist"?

FOX’s ALAN COLMES: “You don’t put up a fence, either, do you? Is that bad neighbor policy, put a fence up?”
FRED THOMPSON: “If it would work. I mean, I don’t know that’s a technical problem. In this day and age, I would not think you would have to use bricks and mortar to get that job done.
Someone who wants to move into world government thereby eliminating our sovereignty and our Constitution by the way. Daddy Bush is globalist and all of his sons did not fall far from the tree.
