Lawyer: Fake Bomb Charge an Overreaction

BOSTON - The MIT student who walked into Logan International Airport wearing a computer circuit board and wiring on her sweat shirt claimed it was harmless artwork. But to troopers who arrested her at gunpoint, it was a fake bomb.

Nineteen-year-old Star Simpson was charged Friday with possessing a hoax device. Her attorney described the charge as offbase and "almost paranoid," arguing at a court hearing that she did not act in a suspicious manner and had told an airport worker that the device was art.

Everyone knows that suicide bombers always wear the bomb vests outside their clothing with blinking lights and wires exposed.

These troopers need to stop watching movies.

And the play dough she carried around was just for making into little clay baskets - yeah, right!......”Geeks” especially “Geeks” at MIT would know immediately the implication of a battery, wires, circuit board and what could easily be mistaken for ‘plastique’ explosives - she obviously was looking to provoke a reaction, and she did. Her lawyer is spinning BS.

I think she knew exactly what she was doing. If she had not been detained and charged she would have been to the local nedia saying that Homeland Security and airport security do not work because she walkked around with this fake bomb around her name and no one stopped her. She wantes tp play the game so take it all the way and throw the book at her.

I guess she took this photograph of a fire at MIT

She seems to be drawn to "critical" situations.

"I found out a long time ago that being admitted to MIT or graduating from there doesn’t necessarily mean a person is smart. Also applies to other institutions.

I have two nieces and a nephew who are Phd candidates. One niece and the nephew test at genius levels. NONE of the three has good walking-around sense. The power to understand very complex info does not equal 'smart'. You are absolutely correct.

Good catch!

Her recent action makes me wonder if she pulled the alarm.

I haven't seen information that she intended any sort of political statement. Do you have a source, or are you just making stuff up?

Exactly. This thing was going to be win/win either way for her.

I found out a long time ago that being admitted to MIT or graduating from there doesn’t necessarily mean a person is smart. Also applies to other institutions.

I've typed this out several times, then refrained from posting it because I'm sure to be flamed. But here is my observation from some experience with 'eggheads'.

In General..and in an IQ range of say 100-180

Common sense is inversely proportional to intelligence.

Fake-bomb suspect was Hawaii athletics star
The 19-year-old Maui woman accused of bringing a fake bomb into Boston's Logan International Airport yesterday was a stellar student-athlete at Hawai'i Preparatory Academy and the news of her arrest stunned those at the small private school.

[snip] "We were all very shocked because she was such an exemplary student," Hawai'i Prep spokeswoman Phyllis Kanekuni said after Simpson's arraignment in East Boston Municipal Court. "We hope the situation can be resolved quickly so she can proceed with her very bright future."

Simpson was born in March 1988 and entered Hawai'i Prep on the Big Island as a seventh-grader. She graduated with honors in 2006.

"She was an exemplary student and swimmer," Kanekuni said, "incredibly hard-working, enthusiastic about learning and very humble and courteous."

Hawai'i Prep is spread across two campuses in the Big Island town of Waimea. It has 590 students enrolled in kindergarten through eighth grade and 350 in high school.

Simpson was captain of the robotics team, captain of the swim team and also played water polo, Kanekuni said. She holds school records in 50- and 100-meter swimming events and medaled at the state swim championships.

She also founded the school's chess club as a freshman and was inducted into Hawai'i Prep's Cum Laude academic society in her junior year, Kanekuni said.

'I LOVE CRAZY IDEAS'

Last year, Simpson was one of 31 Hawai'i student-athletes to win an Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation scholarship. The students had to have a minimum 3.3 grade-point average and demonstrate a need for financial aid.

On her personal Web site at MIT, she says she is studying computers and enjoys tinkering in a student-run machine shop.

"In a sentence, I'm an inventor, artist, engineer, and student, I love to build things and I love crazy ideas," the Web site says. [snip]

Was she testing waters (knowingly or unknowingly) for someone strapping the real thing?
To let her go free will encourage others including those with a hot charge.

This lawyer is just fishing for PR for himself. He has a loser case and a client who will plea. This will get him some much needed PR.

This is where good lawyering and lawyer self interest diverge.

Perhaps we should make a blanket rule that NO lawyer, state or otherwise is permitted to comment about their current cases and representations.
